GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS

ENRICHMENT OF ORE A MUST: The Minister for Health, Labour and Employment,
Dr Suresh Amonkar, said that the Goan mining industry considered to be the
backbone of the state's economy shoulders 40 per cent of the country's
total iron ore export and is in the forefront in mineral processing sector.
Dr Amonkar who, who earlier inaugurated a 3-day international seminar on
Mineral Processing Technology, at the Kala Academy Complex, observed that
enrichment of ore is necessary for achieving the stringent specifications,

Ore Exporters Association and Indian Bureau of Mines. (NT)
OVER-EXPLOITATION OF MARINE RESOURCES: Chairman of the Marine Products
Export Development Authority K Jose Cyriac, in a note of caution said that
unless the Central and State governments took drastic steps to prevent
over-exploitation and over-fishing, marine resources and the country's
economy would be doomed within 5-6 years. The serious issue of depleting
marine resources he said will be one of the main topics which will be
addressed at a three-day India International Seafood Show being held at the
Campal Parade ground from February 7 to 9. (H)
WINTER SESSION: The much-delayed winter session of the Goa Assembly, which
starts today (Feb 7) is likely to be a stormy affair. The five-session will
begin with Governor Kidar Nath Sahani's address at the Assembly Complex,

OPEN LETTER TO VAJPAYEE: "It was very pleasing to read in the newspaper
this morning (6 February) that you have declared 2003 as the Year of Fresh
Water at a function in New Delhi yesterday (5 February) as you have touched
on a matter of great importance to our nation. In my constituency of
Saligao this matter is causing great concern as the wells are getting dry
due to excessive drawal of water from the wells by contractors, who are
selling the water for construction purposes." (Dr Wilfred de Souza, MLA,
Saligao, in GT)
BENAULIM, CURTORIM LACK TALATHIS: Salcete's two largest panchayatsBenaulim
and Curtorimhave begun facing similar problems in recent times. These
11-member panchayat bodies are feeling the heat since both do not have
full-time talathis and the secretaries and are dependent on officials
holding additional charges of other panchayats. (H)
MAHARASHTRA RENEGES ON FERRY PACT: The government of Maharashtra has
declined to honour its commitment to make up for costs incurred by paying
half the amount on ferry boat services at Kiranpani-Arounda route. The
ferry services began in 1989. Kiranpani lies in Goa while Aronda lies in
Maharashtra and therefore it was agreed upon by the two government to share
the expenses. The dues from the Maharashtra government, which stopped

(Konkani-Kannada-Marathi). The deliberations at the trilingual affair were
very lively. (Chandrakant Keni in GT)
GETTING INTO DEBT: "The decision of the State cabinet to increase the
credit guarantee amount ceiling to Rs.750 crore may not be very wise. It
could even boomerang on the State. What the increase in the credit
guarantee ceiling means is that the government will underwrite borrowings
by the various State-run corporations, which means that if the Goa
Infrastructure Corporation, for whose benefit apparently the guarantee has
been raised, defaults on paying back the amount borrowed, the State
government may have to make good. The possibility and indeed the
probability of defaults are very high". (Edit in Herald)
ENCOURAGE INTERNET: "Recent hike in fixed line telephone will badly hurt
students, writers and intellectuals, who use basic telephone service for
