RED TAPE MARS REAL ESTATE SECTOR'S RECOVERY: The recession faced by the
housing industry, third largest in the State, is over and all stakeholders
in the housing and real estate sector are looking forward to a boom period
in Goa, according to the president of Goa Chamber of Housing Industry, Mr
Dinar Tarcar. He, however, lamented that these high expectations are being
marred by tedious conversion formalities, imposition of "irrational" stamp
duty and complex legal implications which needs to be streamlined to help
both citizens and the housing industry in the State. Addressing a press
conference in Panjim on February 8, Mr Tarcar emphasized the need for the
implementation of the McKinsey Report recently submitted to PM Vajpayee
which proposes a reduction in stamp duty from 8 per cent to 2 per cent in
the forthcoming State budget. (H)
KTC OFFICIAL SUSPENDED: Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited, central
workshop, Porvorim, works manager VVS Kunkolienkar, was placed under
suspension on February 9, on charges of committing several irregularities
in the purchase of Stay Leyland buses built by M/s Autorola, Pune. (WE-GT)
FLAT BURGLED: The flat of Rajan Naik, at St Mary's Colony, Miramar, was
burgled. The robbers stole a mangalsutra and a mobile telephone set, all
worth Rs.25,000. (WE-GT)
YOGA COURSE: Clube Tennis De Gaspar Dias, Miramar, Panaji, in association
with the Yoga Couple, Devi Guha Chowdhury and Sujit Chowdhury, are starting
a two-month yoga programme for beginners from 20 February till 19 April.

FOR HACKING BOSS' EMAIL: In the second case involving cyber crime this
year, police arrested one George, a 29-year-old man from Margao, on charges
of illegally procuring company data through email. According to the police,
the accused who was employed as a software engineer at a software company
at the Verna Industrial Estate, had allegedly hacked the password of his
boss and would check confidential email. (H)
ANJEDIVA ISLAND: When nine priests and about 300 devotees undertook a
45-minute boat ride to celebrate the church feast at Anjediva islands on
February 2, they kept alive a tradition which was started nearly 500 years
ago. While the Indian Navy, who presently "owns" the island, wants to
believe that the feast was celebrated on the island for the last time, the
Goa Archdiocese along with Catholic associations and campaigners have
refused to recognise the Navy's decision to prohibit visitors on the island
from May onwards. The controversy is now likely to be raised in the ongoing
Assembly sessionthe third discussion on the topic since 1998. (H)
SCHOOLS DENY: School authorities from Government Primary School and Our
Lady of Grace High School, in Bicholim, denied media reports of their
students having fallen seriously sick after consuming government sponsored
mid-day meals. They have, however, admitted that one item in the mid-day
meal supplied by the agencies, was of sub-standard quality. (H)
FINGERS CROSSED: As the state education department is getting ready to
implement the mid-day meal scheme in Canacona taluka from February 10, the
school authorities and parents have kept their fingers crossed. With the
news of students falling ill after consuming the food packets in Sattari,
the parents in Canacona are yet to make up the mind whether to accept or
reject the scheme. (NT_
COLLEM FARMERS AGITATED: Faced with the Irrigation Department's decision to
disconnect private water pump and demolish the Dholbag bundh in March,
agitating farmers from Collem have threatened to stage morchas and have
even planned to sleep on the bundh on the day of its demolition. (H)
TALK, DEMO ON SNAKES: The Nature Club of SS Dempo College recently
organised a talk on wildlife and held a demonstration on snakes. The
highlight of the event was a snake demonstration where myths about snakes
were exposed. A live demonstration of "Checked keel viper" was also shown.
The faculty members were Neil Alvares and Claudio of Southern Birdwing. (H)

inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, during his day-long

RODRIGUES' LECTURE AT GOA UNIVERSITY: Sebastiao A Rodrigues, a research
scholar at the Centre for Latin American Studies, Goa University, will
deliver a lecture on "Amazon Forests in Global Political and Military
Context", on Tuesday, 11 February, at 10.00 am at the Lecture Hall, Centre
for Latin American Studies. The Centre for Latin American Studies, only one
of its kind in South Asia, is sponsored by the University Grants
Commission, New Delhi, and offers a MA programme in International Studies
and M.Phil/PhD programme in International Studies and Latin American

RAJAN FULARI'S "PARADIGM OF REFERENCES": Goa's wellknown painter Rajan
Fulari and his colleague, Sajal Sarkar, will put up an exhibition of their
recent works of art at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. The exhibition
"Paradigm of References" will be inaugurated by Mr Dov Segev-Steinberg,
Consul General of Israel & Dean of the Consular Corps, Mumbai, on 13
February at 6.30 pm. The exhibition will last till 19 February from 11.00

NOTED GOAN CINEMATOGRAPHER PASSES AWAY: Noted Goan cinematographer, K
Kaikunth, who had made a mark for himself in the Hindi film industry passed
away on February 8 at Comba (Margao) after a brief illness. He was 77 and
is survived by his wife Chaya and sons K Atish and Amit Kuncolienkar.
Vaikunth had worked with renowned names in the Hindi cinema such as Bimal
Roy, Nitin Bose and Raj Kapoor in movies such as "Mere Sanam", "Sita aur
Gita", "Andaaz", etc. (H)
