CUNCOLIM TENSE: Tension is gripping the village of Cuncolim over the sudden blocking of traditional pathway/access, at Pazarconi, used for the yearly procession of the deity's palanquin of the feast "Sotryo" by local residents. This year the "story" are to be held on 22 March and a large number of devotees participate in the traditional procession. (GT)

INDUSTRIAL POLICY TO BE TABLED: The much-awaited industrial policy document is in the final stages and is likely to be tabled in the ongoing Assembly session. According to information available, the thrust of the industrial policy will be on the employment generation for skilled and unskilled youth of the State. (GT)

ARMED MEN RAID CURCA HOUSE: Three unidentified robbers made an abortive bid to rob the residence of Anthony Pereira at Curca, located near the Goa Medical College early Wednesday morning at about 3.30 am. The robbers accosted the maid and threatened her at knife-point, but she screamed for help and alerted the other inmates of the house. (H)

QUALITY EDUCATION: "Mere buildings do not serve any educational purpose. It is the students and staff which surface life in the education institution," said the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, after inaugurating the building premises of government polytechnic college at Curchorem-Cacora. (NT)

UNDERGROUND POWER NETWORK: The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has been entrusted with the task of carrying out the feasibility studies for the conversion of the overhead electrical cable network into an underground network. This conversion has been planned for Margao, Panjim, Ponda, Mapusa and Vasco. This was informed by Minister for Power Digambar Kamat to the Assembly on Tuesday. (H)

FOREIGNER SUCCUMBS: Pekha Santeri Karhi, a tourist from Finland, succumbed to injuries he sustained when he met with an accident at Candolim on February 11 while riding a Kinetic Honda two-wheeler. (GT)

WOMAN HELD: One Hanasben, 29, wife of Deepaklal Patel, was arrested by the Vasco police for using a fake passport yesterday evening after she was deported to Goa by the immigration authorities in the USA. (GT)

GHM PROTEST EMPLOYMENT OF NON-GOANS: The Goa Hitrakhan Manch has strongly protested against the attempts made by Goa Kala Academy to employ non-Goans in important positions and demanded that the appointments of instructors in harmonium and vocals be struck of forthwith. (H)

GOVT SEEKS CENTRE'S INTERVENTION: Reiterating that the Navy has banned visitors from entering Anjediva Island beyond May, the State government has, however, admitted seeking the Union Defence Minister's intervention to allow devotees on the island to celebrate the annual feast. (H)

HAIR, NAIL TO CURE AILMENT: A Secunderabad-based practitioner of alternative medicine, Dr Madhukar Patil, uses the patient's hair or a piece of his nail to provide a cure to his ailment. Dr Patil has pioneered what he refers to as bio-electro magnetic transmission therapythe hair is treated in a solution and the effect is felt by the patient through bio-waves. Delivering a lecture at Goa Pharmacy College in Panjim, Dr Patil held a packed audience of students and staff captive as he spoke about his novel mode of treatment. (GT)

RS.45 LAKH ON PANJIM BEAUTIFICATION: Beautification projects undertaken by the Panjim Municipal Council in the city have cost the council approximately Rs.45.07 lakh. This was disclosed by Urban Development Minister Digambar Kamat to a query from Curtorim MLA Francisco Sardinha in the Assembly. (NT)

SUPERCOP FORESEES FERTILISER BOMBS: The 'Supercop' Mr Julio Rebeiro observed that the terrorists are weak persons, who have not been able to undertake conventional warfare. "The weapons of mass destruction may be far reaching but less sophisticated attacks like those carried out with the help of fertilizer bombs would be used more often in the future," the Supercop predicted. DALIT WOMEN IN GOA ARE BEING OPPRESSED: The socio-economic condition of Dalit women is no better in Goa and face caste discrimination, deprivation, political marginalization and are even denied the basic education. The one-day workshop "Dalit Women-Rising from Shadows" organised by Bailancho Saad exposed that the oppression of the Dalit women is manifold due to caste, class and gender violence. (NT)

FOOD FESTIVAL POSTPONED: The food festival scheduled at Colva beach later this month has been postponed due to the ongoing cricket World Cup. Tourism Minister, Mickky Pacheco told Herald that the festival will now be held in April after Easter. (H)

THOUSANDS OFFER PRAYERS AT MARUTI TEMPLE: A large number of devotees from various parts of Goa thronged to the Maruti temple in Panjim, since early morning on February 12 and offered prayers to the deity on the occasion of the temple's annual zatra (fair). (NT)

RACHOL BREATHES STENCH: Stagnated waters into of the vast khazan lands in the tiny village of Rachol has begun to emit foul odour. Compounding the problem further is the discharge of gutter water in the fields. Briefing newsmen, Sarpanch Andreza Oliveira said the local residents are concerned over the nuisance. (H)

TRANSPORTATION OF FISH FROM CUTBONA: District Magistrate, South, JB Singh, on Wednesday issued an order stopping transportation of fish by vehicles from the Cutbona fishing jetty to the nearby Betul plateau for drying. (H)

LANGUAGE FEUD SURFACE: "The apprehensions expressed by the Opposition MLAs on the floor of the assembly on Tuesday over the moves to rake up the official language controversy, seem to match with the fervour with which the Marathi protagonists have been going about lately to seek justice to their language. Celebration of "Sanskar Saptahas" all over the state, coming as they do at the end of the All India Marathi literary conference at Karad and the Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad in Panaji, appears to be a strong response to the "Asmitai" year festivities launched by Konkani protagonists to commemorate the 12 th birth anniversary of Shenoy Goembab, who is being regarded as the patriarch of Konkani literary movement."
