4-LANE ROADWAY FOR CAMPAL: The Panjim Municipal Council is actively
reviewing plans to convert the stretch of road from Campal to Miramar into
a four-lane roadway without interfering with the 'heritage trees' that now
line the road. While PMC chief officer Sanjit Rodrigues was tightlipped
about the project, sources said that the plan, worked out in consultation
with citizens groups and NGOs, will involve reclaiming 'road-widening' area
from private properties along the existing road. (GT)
PANEL TO STUDY GARBAGE DISPOSAL: A House committee has been appointed to
study the garbage disposal issue and to earmark an area in North and South
Goa for setting up of garbage disposal plants. (H)
PUBLIC VIEWS SOUGHT ON CORPORATION ACT: The State government has invited
public suggestions and views on the City of Panaji Corporation Act 2002
with regards to giving effect to the provisions of the act to the areas
mentioned in schedule I for exclusion. (H)
"STATE MUST HAVE OWN FAMILY LAW": "The State must have a Goa Family Code,"
Opposition leader Pratapsing Rane said during the Question Hour on February
14 while expressing concern over various family-related issues which he
opined are in dire need of attention. The issue was raised by Santa Cruz
MLA Victoria Fernandes, who also raised serious concern over certain
unrealistic and non-progressive gender-biased sections and clauses such as
those referring to infertility and polygamy found in the Portuguese Civil
Code applicable to Goa. Urban Development Minister said that the committee
set up by the government to draft the bill on a Goa Family Code would look
into all these aspects. (H)
"GROUND WATER ACT NOTIFIED": The conservation of Ground Water Resources Act
2002 has been notified, informed Water Resources Minister Filipe Neri
Rodrigues, in response to a private member's resolution moved by former
chief minister Dr Wilfred de Souza. (H)
"MAPUSA" MAY SOON CHANGE TO "MHAPSA": A private member's resolution moved
by Tivim MLA Sadanand Shet Tanavade may see the central township of Bardez,
Mapusa/Mapuca, changed to Mhapsa. Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred de Souza, however,
suggested that a move for change in name should come from the people of the

WHY NOT THIVIM? Sadanand Tanavade's constituency has been generally written
as T-I-V-I-M and pronounced as T-H-I-V-I-M. The Bardez legislator could
probably look into the matter too. (GN)
GOVT OFFICES UNDER ONE ROOF: The state government has decided to bring all
the government offices in Vasco under one roof and all department heads
have been asked to submit their requirements to the Deputy Collector by 20

TRUCK CLEANER KILLED: Rudolf Vaz, a 30-year-old tuck cleaner from Raia
Salcete, died in a road mishap at Suktali-Mollem on Thursday night. The
truck driver, Franky Fernandes, also from Raia, has been detained by the
police on charges of rash driving. (H)
RULING DISPENSATION CORNERS DESHPRABHU: It was like a sweet revenge on the
last day of the session for the treasury benches, who cornered Pernem MLA
Jitendra Deshprabhu for obtaining loans from two co-operative banks by
mortgaging a property, which according to them has hardly any value. (H)
MISSING WOMAN FOUND DEAD: A 44-year-old woman from Gaunsavaddo-Mapusa, who
was missing since January 19, was found dead in a rivulet at Bastora on
February 13. Locals noticed the highly decomposed body of Isabel D'Souza
floating in the river and informed the Mapusa police. (H)
WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE: Mehbuba Bi, a 24-year-old maid servant from Borda,
Margao, committed suicide. She died due to hanging, police said. (NT)
160 BRIDGES, CULVERTS: The Public Works Department will reconstruct 160
small bridges and culverts over the next few years all over Goa. This was
informed by the PWD minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar while responding to a
calling attention motion moved by Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes, who
had earlier conveyed the fear and anxiety in the minds of the residents of
Ribandar about the collapse of a part of the Ribandar Patto bridge inspite
of recent repairs. (H)
CYBER-AGE STUDENT SCHEME: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar launched the Goa
Cyberage Student Scheme for Bicholim on February 15 by presenting sets to

MID-DAY MEAL SCHEME: Whether the mid-day meal scheme actually upset tummies
of primary students in Bicholim is yet to be verified, media reports making
the claims certainly upset Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at Bicholim on
Friday. Accusing a section of the press and the Opposition party of trying
to sour the image of the mid-day meal scheme, Parrikar informed that the
scheme would resume in Bicholim from March. (H)
CHEATED: According to one Lalita Narvekar of Mapusa, she had lent her gold
ornaments to Saulram and Jawant Dangui in February 2002. When asked to
return the ornaments (worth Rs.2.10 lakh), the accused allegedly gave the
complainant fake jewellery. (GT)
SINGLE N.O.C.: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated on February 15 that
the panchayats would henceforth issue a single no objection certificate to
facilitate the construction of free water tap connection sulabh toilet,
etc. instead of issuing separate NOCs. (GT)

GOA'S FERTILITY RATE: Goa has already achieved the fertility target of 1.8
average children per woman set for the year 2010, while 36 per cent of
women and 53 per cent of children between 6-35 months are anaemic. These
are the findings of the National Family Health Survey carried out on a
national level in 198-99. (H)
LOSS DUE TO CYLINDER BLAST: A cylinder blast at Dandeavoaddo, Chinchinim,
at the residence of Menino Mendes caused a loss of Rs.1.50 lakh, at around
1.50 pm on February 14. With the impact of the blast the shutter of the
shop, which is by the side of the house, was blown off and the wall
collapsed and goods in the shop destroyed. (GT)
MLA OBJECTS: Fatorda MLA Damodar Naik raised an objection to the
appointment of two teachers in the Kala Academy who he said were not
residents of the state. He charged that the 15-year domicile clause had
been sidelined by the Kala Academy authorities to accommodate these

Carnival of fun and frolic and the tiatr fraternity are busy gearing up to
perform their religious plays. The history of tiatro tells us that the
trend of scripting religious tiatros was first started by JP Souzalin way
back in the 60s. In later years, the late Dr Simon Fernandes, Fr Gil
Gonsalves, Manuel D'Lima, late Robin Vaz and many others wrote and directed
such tiatros and now we have Ligorio Fernandes, Fr Peter Cardozo, Fr
Planton Faria, Fr Nevel Gracias, Fr Thomas Lobo, Sr Agnes, Christina Vaz,

TURTLE MELA: Over 100 students from 12 high schools of Canacona taluka will
participate in different contests, organised by the Environment department,
to mark the "Turtle Mela" a Galgibaga beach on February 15. Later in the
day, a procession consisting of students, teachers and public will be
carried out at Galgibaga to create awareness on turtle protection. (H)

PARVATI KORDE IS NO MORE: Parvatibai Korde, wife of well-known freedom
fighter Shivram Korde, passed away recently at her son's residence in
Ponda. She was 95. Parvatibai was the mother of Madhav, Pramod (both
