BENAULIM A TAX HAVEN? The Benaulim panchayat has not collected taxes
amounting to Rs.17.58 lakh, according to the audit report for the financial
year 2001-2002. The arrears as on 31 March 2002 was Rs.14.42 lakh as house
tax, Rs.24,131 as light tax, Rs.27,700 as trade tax, Rs.18,147 as cycle
tax, Rs.12,171 as board tax and Rs.2.27 lakh as rent tax. The report
observed that the percentage of taxes collected works out to just 25.88 per
cent. (GT)
SURPLUS POWER YIELDS RS.60 CR: Sale of surplus power will make the Power
department richer by around Rs.60 crore, while the total revenue of the
department is set to cross the Rs.500 crore figure this financial year,
according to Power Minister Digambar Kamat. Every month, the State is
disposing off excess power of around 50 mv thus earning a revenue between
Rs.5 to 6 crore. The actual power needs of the State is put at around 300
mega watt. The State receives power from the Nation Grid, Western Grid,
Southern Grid, besides power from the Reliance-Salgaocar power project. (H)
RAMPONKARS COMPENSATED: For the first time during the last 2 years, five
ramponkars (traditional fishermen) in Cavelossim received, on February 18,
money from the State government as compensation of Rs.5,000 each for nets
destroyed by trawlers during the fishing ban, last year. (NT)
COPS ON LOOKOUT FOR CRICKET BOOKIES: The Goa Police are scanning various
hotels in Goa, trying to pin down a cricket-betting syndicate, which police
claim is operating from Goa. Police sources informed that several teams had
been fanning across the State on the eve of the India-Zimbabwe match,
trying to nab the bookies, following the arrest of several bookies across
the country during the last few days. (H)
BIO-DEGRADABLE GARBAGE BAGS: The Panjim Municipal Council is now planning
to enter the third phase of its garbage collection and management by
introducing bio-degradable garbage bags, manufactured by Pune-based Polymer
Technologies, for a more convenient collection and disposal of city
garbage. (H)
WASTE DUMPING: Excavation and transportation of waste from Sonsodo garbage
yard has started again. This time, the waste is being dumped at the
proposed wholesale fish market, opposite the KTC bus stand along the
Margao-Seraulim road. (H)
CHANDOR-CAVORIM VP CHIEF: John Menino Dias has been elected unopposed as
the new Sarpanch of Chandor Cavorim village panchayat at an election held
on February 18. The election was necessitated following the resignation of
incumbent Sarpanch, Savio Henriques, who quit office to go abroad. (H)
SALGAOCAR'S PLEA DISMISSED: Tourism Minister Miccky Pacheco yesterday
dismissed the appeal filed by Ms Salgaocar Mining Industries Private
Limited seeking possession of the grounded vessel "MV River Princess",
grounded at the Sinquerim beach in Candolim. (GT)
TENDER FOR ONLINE LOTTERY: With the Goa government expediting the process
of launching online lottery, the tenders are likely to be invited within
one month, official sources said. Encouraged by the response to the retail
outlets operating in Goa for other States' online lotteries including
Lotto, the State cabinet a few months ago had decided to go in for one. (H)
TWO KILLED IN ROAD MISHAP: Mansoor Makandar (21) and Ramesh Shirodkar (35)
of Tilamol, Quepem, were killed when their scooter collided against a truck
at Poinguinim on February 18. (GT)
WOMAN CRUSHED TO DEATH: An unidentified 55-year-old woman was crushed to
death by a bus at the KTC bus-stand in Mapusa on February 18. The bus hit
the woman, who fell on the road, and the wheels went over her head
resulting in death. (GT)
BODY FOUND FLOATING: An unidentified male body was found floating in the
Mashem river on Feb 17. (H)
FLAT BURGLED: A flat, belonging to Carbin Diniz, in the busy residential
area in Cariamoddi-Curchorem was burgled on 16th night, while Carbin and
his wife were visiting a relative at Tilamol in Quepem. The culprits robbed
gold ornaments worth Rs.1.20 lakh. (GT)
PLOT UNEARTHED AT GOLTIM: Thanks to the vigilant villagers of Goltim a plot
hatched by the Comunidade of Goltim and Panchayat of Goltim/Navelim has
been unearthed after a struggle of nearly four years, in connection with a
plot of land gifted to the panchayat way back in 1970 for the purpose of
Children's Park. (H)
CURTORIM CONG GHERAOS MAMLATDAR: The activists of the Curtorim Block Youth
Congress Committee on February 18 gheraoed the Salcete Mamlatdar Prasad
Lolayekar demanding that immediate auction of the sluice gates located at
Ilha de Rachol and Raia villages be held. The submitted a memorandum
stating that saline water had entered the khazan lands causing health
hazards to the residents. (GT)
FAST TRACK COURT: The fast track court is expected to commence its
functioning in the new premises at Shram Shakti Bhavan near the Kadamba bus
terminus in Panaji by March end. The work of furnishing the premises is
underway, said Law Minister Francis D'Souza in reply to question tables by
Poriem MLA Pratpasing Rane. D'Souza said that in the year 2002-2003 upto
January, the District and Sessions Court Panaji collected a revenue of
Rs.51.30 lakh, District and Sessions Court in Margao Rs.50,28,246, District
Registrar Rs.4,34,38,867 and Administrative Tribunal Rs.16,775. (GT)

Mohun Bagan scored a solitary goal win the Oil PSU National Football league
