BETTER DEAL FOR DOMESTICS: Passing of Domestic Workers Bill, framing of policies to provide jobs for women without discrimination and stereo-typing, and safeguards and living wages for traditional workers, specially in agricultural sector were some of the demands voiced at a workshop on "Women in Employment" organised by Bailancho Saad in Panjim. OPPN HELP SOUGHT: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has called upon Opposition parties, particularly MLAs to join hands and cooperate with the government in efforts to deliver the best to the people of Goa. While speaking at Pilar, he said while his government is open to suggestions, constructive criticism is welcomed but it should not be just for the sake of mere criticism. (H)

ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY INDUSTRIAL POLICY: Addressing reporters on February 17, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the government has set before itself a mission of generating employment in such a manner that the new jobs created will suit the temperament and skills of people, besides ensuring that there is no threat to ecology. ONE DROWNS IN DUDHSAGAR: A picnic ended in tragedy when a 33-year-old man, Vishwanath Narasinha Rasalkar from Dharwad, drowned in the Dudhsagar river on Sunday (Feb 16) evening. A group of nine persons from Dharwad had gone for a picnic. Vishwanath went for a dip in the river, where he was dragged into the water by strong currents. (H)

NEGLIGENCE OF JAIL GUARD: A magisterial inquiry has held guilty a jail guard for the escape of an undertrial from Nepal, Bir Bahadur Dhani, from the judicial lock-up attached to the Margao court building, and has recommended a series of measures including installation of an electronic devise, to tone up the jail security. CORTALIM VP SECRETARY CRITICISED: The Cortalim residents on February 17 flayed the Cortalim Panchayat Secretary, Pedro Jacques, for misusing his powers, at the darbar held with the MLA Matanhy Saldanha at the panchayat hall. (H)

JAPANESE GOVT'S NOBLE ACT: The financial assistance by the Japanese government to St Xavier's Academy of Caritas Goa has benefited 56 handicapped students of the Institute who are now able to make use of computers. (GT)

QUEPEM DAM WATER: A 53-year-old dam once provided water for drinking and agricultural purposes to the Quepem town and five neighbouring villages, besides attracting tourists to the scenic spot. However, over the years, the water has been declining at an alarming rate, largely due to the growing collection of silt. The presence of carcasses of dead animals and other rubbish in the water has also made the water unsafe for human use. (H)

BURN INJURIES: A 22-year-old married woman, Malu Hangudde, sustained 95 per cent burn injuries, when a stove burst at her residence in Gadeshwar-Khorlim in Mapusa on Monday evening. (H)

COURSE ON RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendra, Alto Porvorim, will organise a research course for teachers and PhD students from May 16 to 23, and June 9 to 11. The objectives of this course is to train researchers in languages and social sciences and to teach the basics of writing a research paper. (H)

WRITERS' WORKSHOP: Dr Victor Rangel Rebeiro, author of "Tivolem", was invited by the English Department of St Xavier's College, Mapusa, for an interaction session with the students of literature recently. Rebeiro enthralled the gathering with humorous anecdotes and handy tips for young aspiring writers. (GT)

RAO FOR AMENDMENT OF ANTI-DEFECTION LAW: Intellectuals, thinkers and prominent personalities in the country have initiated a debate on the issue of anti-defection laws and that they plan to suggest an amendment to the Tenth schedule of the Constitution to avoid defection in small states like Goa. According to the former MP, Mr Shantaram Naik, this was told to him by the former prime minister, Mr PV Narasimha Rao, when he called on the ex-Pm at Raj Bhavan on Sunday. (NT)

HELP-AGE PROJECT: HelpAge India, a national-level charity working for the cause and care of the elderly, has financed one more project at St Joseph's Home for the Aged, Siolim. They presented a cheque of Rs.1,00,500 as the first instalment of the total project cost of Rs.2,01,000. (GT)

M.A.G. TO LAUNCH PEACEFUL PROTESTS: The motorcycle action group has decided to launch peaceful protests against the government's failure to notify two exemptions to the helmet rule as mooted by the former transport minister, Mr Pandurang Raut, in consultation with the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, in March 2001. A special meeting would be held on February 22 to finalise the state level agitation. (NT)

KUWAIT GOANS FLAY KONKANI OPPONENTS: Kuwait Konkani Kendra has unanimously condemned the "malicious campaign (being) carried out against Konkani by the illegitimate Goans settled in Goa". A resolution to this effect was passed at an extra-ordinary meeting of the Kendra, in Kuwait, recently. (H)

CHURCHILL'S WIFE SUFFERS STROKE: Ms Fatima Alemao, the wife of former chief minister and Churchill Bros Sports Club patron, Mr Churchill Alemao, suffered an epileptic stroke during the Churchill-Vasco NFL match at the Nehru Stadium at Fatorda on February 17. (NT)
