GOA DEMANDS SPECIAL STATUS: The Goa government has requested the Union government to extend special category status to Goa on the lines of Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal, for economic and industrial development. A formal request to this effect was made to Dy Prime Minister LK Advani by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during the former's visit to Goa, on March 16. (GT)

COCO BEACH TENSE: Violence erupted yet again at Coco Beach, Nerul, today (March 17) afternoon between the traditional fishermen (ramponkars) and a foreign national, who re-started operating a speed boat at the beach three days ago. The sudden re-commencement of the water sports operations despite their earlier objections to water sports here, because it depletes their fish catch, angered the local fishermen. Converging at the beach, the angry fishermen burnt down the water sports shack, earlier known as Wave Rider. Police said that it belonged to a British national, Ms Maureen Chapman. (NT)

SOUTH GOA IN WATER CRISIS: With the summer sun blazing, water in South Goa is becoming a scare commodity and the district is 15 million litres short per day. To cite an example: Salcete taluka needs 63 MLD but gets 57 MLD of water. Dwindling water levels at the Opa water plant has forced the department to make arrangements to float a tender to draw water from the Selaulim dam. (GT)

LOUTULIM, RACHOL KHAZXAN LANDS INUNDATED: The ongoing ding-dong battle between the Salcete Mamlatdar and the operators of sluice gates of khazan lands in Loutulim and Rachol villages, took a new turn on Monday (March 17) with the police arresting eight persons for introducing saline water sans permission. 'POWER' OF DIPLOMA: In three years the electricity department is expected to run out of engineers and the next chief engineer could be a diploma holder. Presently 80 percent of the staff are diploma holders. With the passage of time these diploma holders rose to occupy posts of junior, assistant and even executive engineer on the basis of seniority. Faced with this alarming scenario the government has formulated a scheme to allow diploma holders to earn a degree. (GT)

DECISION ON HELMET CRITICISED: The fourth attempt to withdraw the decision making the wearing of helmets mandatory was noted with concern and an opinion was even voiced hoping that the Bombay High Court takes suo moto cognizance of the derailment of the move. Dr VG Dhume, Dean of Goa Medical College, who delivered the opening address at the seminar on "Society Health: Issues and Concerns" said more persons are dying from accidents on roads rather than health problems and diseases. MANDREM MURDER: Pernem police has said Salvador Lobo (38) of Socorro, arrested on charges of murder at Ashvem-Mandrem on January 14, has confessed that he murdered landlady Regina Z Fernandes (65), when she caught him red-handed while trying to break into the room of guest a Ashvem beach. (H)

BODY FOUND: The body of a 35-year-old unknown male person was found floating in the river Mandovi on March 17. The body was recovered at a sluice gat near Four Pillars. (NT)

WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE: A 37-ear-old lady, Asha alias Aishwarya, wife of Rajendra Kudnekar Jhalmi from Saligao, committed suicide by hanging herself at her father's house at Khobravaddo, Calangute, on March 17. (NT)

PROBE IN CANACONA KIDNEY CASES: Two teams have embarked on separate research to probe the high incidence of kidney failure in Canacona taluka. One team represents the Goa University's Department of Microbiology, led by Professor Dr Joe D'Souza, while the second team comprises the Directorate of Health Services and medicos from GMC. (H)

CHARGES BASELESS: The deputy sarpanch of Carmona panchayat, Nesbit D'Costa, has termed as baseless and an act of frustration the charges made against him by four members of the body recently. (H)

'HOLI'DAY TODAY: It is holiday today (March 18) on the occasion of Holi for State and Central government employees, banks and educational institutions but much confusion prevailed before the declaration became stark clear. The general administration department's belated preponement of the holiday from 19 March to 18 March preceded an atmosphere of uncertainly in government departments, educational institutions, banks and elsewhere. NEED TO PROJECT CORRECT IMAGE: Goan culture is required to be nurtured in a proper way, stated Mr Menino Peres, joint director, department of Information and Publicity, at a function held at Calangute, organized to present awards to the winners of Mando festival. After presenting awards to "Merxechim Sallkam", and others, Mr Peres gave a call to strengthen the efforts to project the correct cultural image of Goa and its identity to the outer world. (NT)

NEW SARPANCH FOR MAJORDA: Ms Visitation da Silva on Monday (Mar 17) became the new Sarpanch of Majorda-Utorda-Calata village panchayat. This is the second time that Visitation has been elected as Sarpanch of Majorda. Incidentally, her husband, Aleixo da Silva, better known as Manush, was earlier a sarpanch of the village. (H)
