Our classes are almost a third of the way through and I thought that some of you might be interested in our progress.

Classes started on March 07 with 15 students (fourteen of them registered and paid-up). Our teacher, Joao Manual Pereira has done an excellent job so far and we are well on our way to getting a solid grounding in amchi bhas.

The first lesson started with Joao giving us the basics of the Devanagri script - the consonants and vowels. This proved to be challenging for most but it was (and still is) necessary for us to get a basis for the sounds in order for us to pronounce Konkani correctly.

The class is moving progressively towards a type of "Konkani immersion" where Joao will try and converse with us more and more in Konkani.

Each student was given a folder of lessons and an audio cassette of the Devanagri alphabet. This cassette also contains some popular Konkani songs. Each student also received a copy of the Goan Millenium Directory which, among other things, also contains lyrics of songs and Konkani proverbs.

Joao e-mails all students the re-cap of each previous lesson together with home-work for the following week.

In another three weeks we should all be able to sing (and understand) the lyrics of Molbaillo Dou from the movie Amchem Noxib.

A blind copy of this e-mail is being sent to all the students.

I am sure that all the students will agree with me when I say that the classes are a lot of fun.
