24 May. The Citizen. Ian Reijs has been honoured for his bravery after he saved Sonia
Fernandes who was being attacked by her husband, Joao, with a knife. Mrs Fernandes had
fled her home following a domestic argument and was heading towards the police station
when her husband gave chase, waving the knife. Mr Reijs went to her aid, grabbed Joao
and managed to get him to drop the weapon. Joao Fernandes pleaded guilty to attempted
murder and was sentenced to nine years imprisonment. For full text of this and the

24 May. BBC. UK's oldest woman reaches 111. Lucy d'Abreu (nee D'Souza) was born in

25 May. East African Standard. Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor seeks Mrs Carvalho, a teacher at
the Loreto Convent, Valley Road, Nairobi who was her mentor. "Amazing women teachers
and nuns like Mrs Carvalho, I wonder where she is now" she says. Yvonne has been
nominated for the US$15,000 prize money in this year's Caine Prize for African Writing

21 May. The Evening Standard. Commissioning bespoke furniture for your home need not
break the bank. The atmosphere of Michael D'Souza's shop, Mufti, is permeated with the
tang of leather, a material he loves to use in engaging ways: you can even order a
leather bookcase or chest of drawers. His shop has two floors of simple, elegant
designs in materials that also include solid wood, rattan, glass, linen, cashmere and

22 May. The Age. (Melbourne). Larry Mendonca was found guilty of seven charges of
breaching food safety regulations in his restaurant. Mendonca, 62, had pleaded not
guilty. His mother, Deonisia, 83, and family company Candolim were also charged.

Patricia D'Souza is the managing editor of Nunatsiaq News, a newspaper in the Canadian
Arctic covering the territory of Nunavut. She was born in Canada and is of Goan
origin. Her parents were born in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania) and moved to Canada
in 1972.

Standard Newspaper Group has retired. "In the interim, the Managing Director of KTN,
Ian Fernandes, will oversee the management and operations of the Group," Mr Davies

25 May. Boston Herald. Restaurant review: The menu at Bhindi Bazaar includes chicken
cafreal, a popular preparation in Goa. Chef Samir Majmudar admits, "I took some
liberties with this curry in order to bring down the sharpness. I added onions and
tomatoes, but I kept the cilantro base. And it's usually a dry dish, not necessarily
curry form, meaning floating in a sauce - as we present it. If you showed this to a
Goanese guy he would say, `This is not how I would make it,' but I like it this way."

25 May. Sunday Telegraph Magazine (Sydney, Australia). Gus D'Souza has renamed his
restaurant Kokum - Taste of Goa to Viva Goa and moved it to Scott St. Appetisers (all
$12.90) include six spicy oysters Anjuna. The seafood main courses ($18.90) reflect
Goa's coastal heritage. The pan-fried fish of the day in spiced mint and coriander
sauce, or prawns simmered in a light and tangy curry are authentic and superb.
27 May. Digital Spy. The Ferreiras, a new family of Goan descent, are moving into
Albert Square next week, the BBC has announced today. The first appearance of the
five-strong family will be on June 3 at 19:30 Their first appearance promises to stir
interest in the Square, with the Square's residents receiving an "unexpected welcome"
upon arriving at the Ferreiras' housewarming party.

27 May. Belfast New Letter. Pooja Shah plays Kareena Ferreira in EastEnders. She says,
"The fact that we're Asian is not forgotten but because we're Catholic we're very
modern, very westernised, we can go to the pub, we can have relationships." As the
first major storyline for any of the new characters, Kareena is having a secret
relationship with Tariq
Her screen brother Ronny is a very funky, cool kind of character - a bit of a fashion
victim - in the music business. He says, "A lot of the girls in Albert Square are 18
to 20, and they are a bit in awe of this guy that's come in, so there's definitely
going to be stuff to do with Ronny and his women."
25 May. News of the World. Dan Ferreira dresses up as Elvis Pressley for his debut in
EastEnders. The regulars are expecting the family to be very traditional Asians who
don't drink, so they're amazed when Dan opens the door. The Ferreiras aren't
stereotypes. They are a big, big part of EastEnders' future and will be full of
surprises.
29 May. Daily Telegraph. Wetherspoon boozers seem to be everywhere these days so I was
not surprised to read that one has appeared in Goa. More accurately that should read
that there is a Weather
Spoon Cafe in Goa, which was spotted by Joe Tones of Tilbury. Tones tells the story of
his trip to this exotic joint in the pub group's newsletter.
