PLASTIC ROADS UNDER STUDY: PWD is studying the possibility of using plastic for making roads, taking cue from successful experiments in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. PWD Principal Engineer PP Borkar said the matter has been discussed at government level and efforts would be made to avail the technology for utilising discarded plastic in a useful manners. (GT)

CM COMMISSIONS WATER AUGMENTATION SCHEME: Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar today said that all the projects undertaken by the Water Resources Department to augment water resources in the State will be completed during next two years to provide ample water supply and meet water requirement of the people. He said, works of projects concerning water resources to the tune of Rs 47 crore is presently underway and added that additional amount of Rs 100 crore will be required to complete the remaining works. He mentioned that once all these works are completed there will be no scarcity of water for drinking and irrigation purpose. He was speaking as chief guest after inaugurating augmentation of water supply to Opa Water Works by pumping of water from Selaulim main canal to Kalay River at Sanguem yesterday. (H)

INDISCRIMINATE USE OF WELL WATER: The Ground Water Officer, Jagdish S Hosamani said that indiscriminate extraction of water from wells for commercial purpose is criminal offence under the Goa Ground Water Regulation Act 2002 and strict action like imposing of fines and closure of wells, seizure of material and equipment, electrical disconnection can be taken against those found violating the provisions of this Act. He was speaking at the seminar on Water Crisis organised in the Saligao panchayat hall today by Saligao Joint Front comprising of Saligao Comunidade, Saligao Civic & Consumer Cell, Saligao Hindu Sabha, Saligao Church Parish Council and Saligao village panchayat. NADKEM BRIDGE STILL IN INFANCY STAGE: If you happen to be one of the 100-odd people living in a remote hamlet surrounded by wildlife and your only link to rest of the world during the monsoons is by a makeshift bridge comprising two worn-out logs, life in that part of Indias Best Stateis unlikely to bring much cheer. And plans to replace the worn-out and precarious makeshift bridge with a three-span bridge have been as swift as the contractors pace of work. Entrusted to construct a new bridge by May 2002, the contractor has hardly made any concrete progress in the project and the bridge is still in its infancy stage. (H

CHINESE CREW ARRESTED: The entire 20 men crew of seized Chinese vessel MV Hal Feng has been put under arrest for economic offences relating to the Maritime Zones of India Act 1981. Deputy Commandant D P Yadav from CGS Samar has registered a case against the Chinese Vessel MV Hal Feng at the Mormugao Harbour Police Station, Vasco. It may be recalled that an Advanced Off Shore Patrol Vessel (AOPV), CGS Samar of Coast Guard while on routine patrol, apprehended a Chinese fishing mother vessel on the wee hours of June 5 for undertaking unauthorised and sea transfer of fish. TRANSFORMER FOR SANCOALE: Itis over six months that two poles have been erected for the installation of a transformer near the Blessed Joseph School at Sancoale but the no transformer has been fixed till date and the residents continue to have problems with low voltage. The local panch Simon Carvalho said that the site for the transformer was selected after taking into confidence the residents of the area and the school management by the local MLA, Matanhy Saldanha. WELL CLEANER RESCUED: He went to retrieve a plastic pot but nearly lost his life, when he got trapped in a well at Bordem-Bicholim on Saturday evening. According to reports, Venkatesh Bhandari of Sarvan-Bicholim was hired by Prashant Hinde of Bordem to clean a 45-feet deep well and was asked to retrieved a plastic pot which had fallen into the well&Led by A R Aga, H S Haldankar, P A Kambli, M R Pakle, M B Gaunde, Y N Gauns managed to pull out Venkatesh, after he spent nearly 20 minutes in the well. MEDIA EDUCATION FOR NUNS, PRIESTS: A group of priests, nuns and lay teachers participated in a media education course on Communication and Media Involvement, organised by the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media (DCSCM) at the Pastoral Institute, Old Goa. The course was conducted by Fr Jacob Srampickal SJ, former Principal of National Institute for Social Communications Research and Training (NISCORT) and recently appointed professor at the Gregorian University in Rome, and Sr Leela Joseph, media Educationist and former Registrar of NISCORT. ST INEZ CEMETERY FACES SHORTAGE OF SPACE: The St Inez cemetery, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Corporation of Panaji, is the only cemetery for Catholic community residing in Panaji, Miramar and Tonca&It is learnt that a land admeasuring about 2,500 sq metre has been acquired adjacent to the Hindu crematorium as there is possibility of cemetery at St Inez facing space scarcity. A part of the acquired land 300 sq metre each will be reserved for the members of the Syrian Church and the Christian Fellowship. (Pio Esteves in NT)

PEDESTRIAN SUCCUMBS: A pedestrian who sustained severe head injuries in a road accident at Panchawadi succumbed in the Goa Medical College hospital, Bambolim. According to the investigating officer, an unknown vehicle knocked down the pedestrian on Friday before fleeing from the scene. The police are on the look out for the driver of the vehicle. (NT)

FAST TRACK COURT IN MARGAO: For the speedy disposal of cases, a fast track court has been constituted in Margao. The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao, Mr P V Kamat has been appointed the additional district and assistant sessions judge. According to a notification issued by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court, Mr Bhanudas Gaunker will be the public prosecutor. (NT)

ANTI-PLASTIC DRIVE EVOKES GOOD RESPONSE: Anti-plastic drives initiated by municipalities, panchayats and other semi-governmental organisations in South Goa have evoked good response. In the first phase six municipalities falling in the South Goa district have collected over 350 kg of plastic. According to officials of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), the anti-plastic drive has started in all the 16 MMC wards and about 40 truck loads of plastic had been collected. (NT)

HIGHER SECONDARY ADMISSION BEGINS: Though there are no signs of monsoon the new academic year begins today (June 9). Students and parents were seen busy buying text books and other school materials. With Goa Board announcing the SSC results on Friday, the admission for higher secondary schools are also beginning tomorrow. Some of the syllabus of standard VIII has been changed from this academic year. (NT)

THEFT AT MOTORCYCLE SHOWROOM: The Margao town police on Saturday arrested three ex-convicts in connection with a theft case reported at the Hero Honda showroom in the city. The police inspector, Mr Prabodh Shirvoiker said that Nicalau Pereira, Prithiviraj Bandodker and Damodar Bhandari were arrested yesterday afternoon by the police control room after receiving prior information. POP, JAZZ COMPETITION: The Kala Academy has invited entries for participation in the pop, beat and jazz music festival of competitive nature to be held on June 27, at the Dinanath Mangueshkar Kala Mandir, Campal. The first prize for the best performance, in each category will be Rs 5,000, followed by Rs 3,000 and 2,000 as the second and third prizes. The last date for submission of entries in the prescribed format so as to reach Kala Academy's office is June 16. (NT)

WARNING AGAINST OUTBREAK OF DIARRHOEA: With the onset of monsoons, outbreaks of diarrhoea and other diseases are frequently reported from the different parts of the state. These outbreaks of diarrhoea mostly affect children below the age of 5 years. A press note issued states that the directorate of health services has geared its machinery to meet any eventuality and directed all the peripheral units to be vigilant. Necessary guidelines regarding the action to be taken have already been issued to all the peripheral units. (NT)

HEALTH COURSE: Vividha Higher Secondary school, Navelim-Sankhali, has received permission from Goa Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary to introduce a paramedical course namely health care which is equivalent to nursing in the vocational stream from the academic year 2003-2004. Students who have passed SSC examination with 60 per cent and above can seek admission for the course. This course will have three subjects namely fundamentals of nursing, community health nursing and maternity besides child health and English communication skills and a foundation course. (NT)

GOA TO BE PERMANENT VENUE FOR FILM FETE: The beaches of Goa will soon have another lurethe Indian International Film Festival, a la Cannes. The government is likely to formally announce next week that Goa will be the permanent venue for the annual ten-day festival, sources said. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is scheduled to meet Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and officials of the Directorate of Film Festivals early next week to discuss the issue. NIRMALA INSTITUTE COMPLETES 40 YRS: Nirmala Institute of Education completes 40 years this year. The institute was established to meet the urgent need for teacher training to build the new educational system in post liberation Goa. Dr Teresa Kalathiveetil was its founder principal.
