ALERT STAFF, COPS FAIL BANK ROBBERY: The Panjim city police managed to nab a
gang of five persons, who attempted a daring robbery in the afternoon at the
State Bank of India Treasury Branch. While one member of the gang began to
distract the cashier, another entered the cashier's cabin and proceeded to
help himself to bundles of cash. The third waited at the entrance to the
cashier's chambers with a shopping bag in hand. Distracted by the arrival of
new banking equipment, the staff paid little notice to the man in the
cashier's cabin thinking that he was a staff member. However, deputy cashier
Miguel Pereira noticed one of the gang member. (GT)

CRZ IMPLEMENTATION: Union Environment and Forests Minister, TR Baalu,
yesterday indicated that there would be no let up whatsoever in implementing
the Coastal Zone Regulations in the country. Mr Baalu, who was on a two-day
visit to Goa as part of the parliamentary committee on environment and
forests, said the objections to CRZ raised by States would only be
considered by his ministry purely on a scientific basis. (H)

NEW ECONOMIC POLICIES HAMPERING GROWTH: The economy of our country is badly
hit by the new economic polices, which failed to bring about a turnaround.
Our over-dependence on foreign funds for development has misfired and the
liberalisation of tax returns has resulted in evasion, lamented the
president of All India Trade Union Congress, Mr J Chittaranjan, while
addressing the general council meeting yesterday in Margao. (NT)

"RIVER PRINCESS": Mr TR Balu sought to play down the looming environmental
threat posed by "River Princess", the vessel grounded a few hundred metres
away from where the Minister addressed the press. "We have persuaded the
State government to act. We are told that it (River Princess) will be
shifted soon," Mr Baalu said when his attention was drawn to the vessel,
which has been threatening the northern coast for the last three years. (H)

HELD ON DOWRY CHARGES: In case of dowry-related abuse, the police arrested
one Aires Cordeiro after his wife leveled charges of harassment against him.

MINOR GIRL DROWNS: Jera Neha, a minor girl, was drowned yesterday at
Karasvaddo, in a brook behind her house. (H)

DROWNING IN SALOI: The body of 30-year-old Ajay Ankush Karekar was found
floating in the river at Char Manos, Salvador do Mundo. (NT)

UNCLAIMED BODIES: The Margao Municipal Council had to spend a sum of
Rs.42,970 in disposing off the 123 unclaimed bodies during the year 2002-03,
according to the Chief Officer of MMC, Mg GP Naik. (NT)

DRUG PEDDLAR CONVICTED: The Special Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances Court at Mapusa recently convicted Man Singh, a Delhi resident,
for possession of a huge quantity of drugs. (GT)

DUO ARRESTED FOR ABUSING PRIEST: A Carambolim resident and his son allegedly
trespassed into the church property and abused and threatened the parish
priest with dire consequences. (GT)

RAPE CASE CHARGESHEET: The investigation in the alleged gang rape of the
Fine Arts college student, which took place a few weeks ago, is complete and
a chargesheet will be filed within 8-10 days. (H)

NEW CRITERIA FOR EDUCATION LOANS: The government has changed the eligibility
criteria for those applying for the interest-free loans for higher/technical
education this year which will now take into account the performance in only
Standard X/XII. This year, it will also allow those who have obtained a
scholarship to avail of a loan, unlike last year. This is the second year
the interest-free loan scheme will be implemented. (H)

250 BULL DIVERTED TO MEAT COMPLEX: The Department of Animal Husbandry and
Veterinary Services on Friday carried out a raid and diverted 250 bulls to
the Goa Meat Complex for hygienic slaughtering. (H)

FOREST ZONE: Bombay High Court at Goa has directed the State and all
authorities including the Collector and planning agencies not to grant any
further approval for development or change of zone in areas identified as
private forests by two separate committees till the matter is decided by the
Supreme Court. (GT)

HELD SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES: Five smokers were booked by authorities under
the Smoking and Spitting Acts in the markets in Margao yesterday. They were
let off after imposing a fine of Rs.100 each. (H)

CUNCHELIM GETS WATER ON ALTERNATE DAYS: Though the rain gods have been more
than benevolent to the State, the government seems to be struggling to
ensure regular water supply to its citizens. Residents in Cunchelim, Mapusa,
continue to receive water supply on alternate days and for a "few hours"
despite the wet spell. (H)

CAMPAIGN ON WATER CONSERVATION: Dr TB Cunha Government HSSS, Panaji,
recently organised a Padhyatra of higher secondary students from Campal to
Boca de Vaca spring, in order to create awareness on the theme "Water,
Elixir of Life". (GT)

SCHEMES ON ENVIRONMENT: The world-famous Carambolim lake, the tourist
attraction at Mayem lake, the perennial sources of Bondvoll and Chimbel are
six lakes in Goa which have been shortlisted for schemes from Central
Government. Union Minister of Environment and Forests, TR Baalu, said his
ministry will take up projects once the Goa government formulates schemes
and submits them. (GT)

FOUR-LANING OF CAMPAL-MIRAMAR ROAD: The Corporation of the City of Panaji is
likely to finalise plans for the four laning of the Campal-Miramar road by
the end of July. The proposed four laning is currently under review
following objections raised by several residents along the proposed route.

UNERGROUND POT BAFFLES COPS: A resident of Karujem in Cuncolim noticed a
small depression in the ground in the vicinity of his house. The police
along with the labourers went to the site and after an hour-long digging
operation, found a big earthen pot. Police claimed that no gold or other
valuables were found inside. But, like members of the public, they too are
baffled how a big earthen pot sans any items found its way inside the
ground. (H)

MALAYSIAN TEAM: A 15-member team from Malaysia under the leadership of A
Sevaguru, President of Malaysian Indian Tour & Travel Association, called on
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at his residence at Altinho, Panaji. The
team discussed about the promotion of tourism activities between Goa and
Malaysia. (GT)

GHAIE, A TOUCHING TALE: F D'Cunha's non-stop drama "Ghaie" is indeed worth
watching for the touching story, very good acting by the new actors and
above all mellifluous voices of practically all the actors. "Ghaie" takes up
the oft-repeated story of children forsaking their aged parents, but with a

annual Eminent Goans Day on July 9 at 11.15 at the SFX High School, Siolim.

FR MASCARENHAS AWARDED PHD: Fr Theodore Mascarenhas was recently awarded a
doctorate in Sacred Scriptures by Pontifical Biblical Institute. The thesis
is centered on the theme: Israel's missionary function in Psalms. R Theodore

Association have condemned the statements made by the president of Fransa
FC, Mickky Pacheco, against the secretary of the All India Football
Federation, Alberto Colaco. The clubs have expressed their continued support
to Colaco for the development of football in Goa and in India. (GT)

MUNDVEL ENTER SEMI FINALS: local challengers, Mundvel SC, yesterday
qualified for the semi-finals of Bandodkar Memorial Football tournament,
