"The senders names will be kept secret. With a system like a post box, anonymity is obvious. People need not worry about it," Director General of Police Seva Dass told reporters on Tuesday.
"There are several instances, where inputs from such sources have solved numerous crimes and aided police investigations," he claimed. Another senior police officer informed, that complaints dealing with police excess, corruption in the department, tip-offs etc.
"In several hit and run cases, the police reach the site, after the action. Eye-witnesses can simply scribble the car number or any other information on a post card or any other mailing paraphernalia and send it across to the specified PO box number," the officer informed.
He also stated, that with some luck, investigations into complaints which have been difficult to crack like the murder cases of late, could be revived, if relevant inputs are received by the police.
"There is every chance, that some fresh lead may flow in from the members of the public," the officer added. It may be recalled, that a similar system involving pre-paid postal cards had been initiated but had met with even less than limited success.
