RS.15 CR BOTANICAL GARDEN: The Forest department and Goa Forest Development
Corporation have joined hands to promote and set up a botanical garden
costing Rs.15 crore in the near vicinity of the Selaulim dam. The garden
will be developed on the lines of the famous botanical garden at Bangalore
and Union Tourism Minister Jagmohan is expected to visit Goa shortly in this
connection. The garden will be set up on 24 demarcated plots spread out on
27 hectares of land near the dam. It will comprise a nursery of plants, a
glower garden, water sports facilities, artificial springs, fountains and

MOTHER TONGUE ISSUE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday said that
people in the State are free to decide whether Konkani or Marathi should be
their mother tongue, and added that English cannot be the mother tongue of
Goans. Mr Parrikar, commenting briefly on the language issue in his
inaugural address at the Marathi Melawa, said it is difficult to increase
usage of Konkani or Marathi in the administration because 70-80 of the
officials do not know these languages. (H)

WATER HARVESTING FEATURES IN ASSAGAO GRAM SABHA: Water harvesting, stopping
of sale of water form the village wells, transfer of house tax collection
from Mapusa Municipal Council to Assagao panchayat, maintenance of internal
roads, proper water supply, acquisition of land for a playground, etc
figured among the various issues discussed at the Gram Sabha held at the
Assagao Village Panchayat this morning. Sarpanch Victor D'Souza stressed on
the issue of water harvesting and the necessity of stopping the sale of
water from the wells in the village, where some areas faced a serious water
shortage during summer. He requested the Agriculture Minister, Dayanand
Mandrekar, who was the chief guest, to give a serious thought to the matter.

HISTORY WITH A GOAN TOUCH: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that a study
has been conducted to change the syllabus of history subject in Goan schools
with emphasis on local history from the next academic years. While
inaugurating a get-together of students organised by the Konkan Marathi
Parishad at the Kala Academy yesterday, he told students that it was more
important to acquire knowledge rather than strive to capture top position in

"RAGGING ON THE DECLINE": During an interactive session with college
students, organised at the Konkan Marathi Parishad, the Chief Minister, Mr
Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that ragging cases in colleges in the state
had come down due to the measures taken by the State government. (NT)

SCHOOL CHILDREN TARGET OF EVE TEASING: Eve teasing seems to be taking an
ugly turn in Vasco, with school children becoming targets of eve teasers.
School authorities too are reported to have called in the services of the
police. In one such case, a student studying in a primary school refused to
get to school in fear of eve-teasers, who had made her life miserable. (H)

MIGRANT JUVENILE DELINQUENTS: The burgeoning migrant population in Margao
has put the city police in a predicament. They don't know how to tackle
juvenile delinquency, which emanates from squalid living conditions in slums
in the South Goa district headquarters. The teenagers, who are involved in
the crime to make a fast buck, sometimes 'outperform' hard core criminals

PEOPLE'S COOPERATION: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has stated that
governance does not only comprise the chief minister, ministers and MLAs but
also the involvement of the people to ensure the smooth functioning of the
government. The CM was addressing party workers after announcing the new

FISHING BAN HELPS: The imposition of the fishing ban in Goa for two months
during the monsoons should help increase fish production in the long run as
has been demonstrated in Kerala, states a report by the National Institute
of Oceanography, Dona Paula. (H)

STUDENT'S BODY WASHED ASHORE: The body of Prachi Basmi (19) of Mumbai which
was washed ashore yesterday morning was handed over to the relative of the
deceased by the Calangute police. Prachi was on a trip to Goa along with a
group of students from Yadav College, Bhandup-Mumbai. (WE-GT)

BOY COMMITS SUICIDE: Eldin P Godinho, a 16-year-old boy who was reported
missing, committed suicide by hanging himself at Panchawadi in Ponda on July
24 night. (H)

WOMAN MISSING: Ms Parul Dvivedi, wife of a naval officer, residing at Nofra
Colony, Dabolim, has been reported missing since July 25 afternoon. (NT)

"BEST BEFORE" DATE: A public notice by the Directorate of Food and Drugs
Administration, Panjim, Goa, states that under the provisions of the
Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 and Rules thereunder, manufacturers
of soft drinks are required to declare on the bottles of the said product
with the date of manufacture and "best before" date on the body of the
bottles instead of giving such a declaration on the crown of the bottles.

ALLEGED MURDERER WAS A DESERTER: It was a piece of paper which recorded two
vital actions of Vishant alias Sushant S Narve (31), who allegedly murdered
his sister-in-law Santa Cruz on 25 July, before committing suicide sometime
later in the day. One side of the paper was an official letter, informing
Vishant that he had been a deserter in the police force, while the other
side was used by Vishant to scribble his suicide note. (H)

UGC INCLUDES KONKANI: National Educational Testing, University Grants
Commission, has decided to include the subject Konkani in the next
Maharashtra state level eligibility test. This subject has been deleted from
the list of UGC-NET subjects and accredition of SLET, Maharashtra, will be

REMEDIAL TEACHING: Claiming that the circular issued by the government dated
April 13, 2003, in respect of mandatory 200 hours of remedial teaching for
every teacher, is ultra vires of the provisions of Education Rules, 1986,
the President of All Goa Secondary School Teacher's Association, Ravindra
Nagvekar, has termed the same as an anti-teacher act on the part of the

PG DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM: Dhempe College of Arts & Science, Miramar-Panaji,
will commence Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication
from 4 August. This course was recognized by and affiliated to the Goa

Touxeachem Fest (the feast of cucumbers) today. It is the feast of their
patroness St Anne, reputed to be a great giver and Christians and Hindus

chanting: Senhora, tomai esta colher e dai-me mulher (Lady, take this spoon

GOA'S BEST VOCATIONAL TEACHER: Deepak A Karmalkar, a computer engineering
graduate and teaching at Dnyanprassark Mandal's PVS Kushe Higher Secondary
School  and Institute of Vocational Studies, Assagao, has been presented by
the country's Ministry of Human Resource Development the best "Vocational
Teacher Award 2003", for his excellent contribution towards the

GOANS IN EAST BENGAL TEAM GREETED: Goa's sports officials and footballers
lovers are all praise for Goan players-Alvito D'Cunha and Mahesh Gowali-both
of whom are important members of the East Bengal team, which defeated BEC
Tero Sasana 3-1 in Jakarta in the finals of the Asean Club Championship, and
created history for Indian football. Nigerian Mike Okoro, Baichung Bhutia
and Alvito D'Cunha scored for East Bengal.

DEMPO IN SEMIS: Dempo Juniors made it to the semi-finals of the GFA U-19
football tournament , getting the better of SAI Hostel, Ponda, 301 in a
