MOB ON RAMPAGE IN PONDA: An irate mob blocked the road at Dharbandora for
over seven hours after a mining truck skidded off the road and struck three
students, two of whom are reported to be in a critical condition. The truck
went off the road around 7.30 am after the driver applied brakes while
attempting to overtake another truck. (GT)

IMPACT OF POWER ACT: Unable to go ahead with the new Electricity Act 2003
without a clear-cut framework, the State government has engaged a
Mumbai-based law firm to study the impact of the Act on Goa. (H)

FOR NOT PAYING DOLE: The Congress Legislative Party deplored the government'
s failure to pay the monthly dole to the senior citizens under the Dayanand
Social Security Scheme and for its attempt to privatize a block at the Goa
Medical College Hospital, Bambolim. (GT)

TRANSLATION OF PORTUGUESE LAWS ALMOST COMPLETE: Law Minister Francis D'Souza
yesterday stated that the work of translating and improving the part of
Portuguese family laws was nearing completion and a draft bill would be
introduced in the ensuing monsoon session of the Goa Assembly. A committee
comprising legal luminaries, such as retired Sessions Court Judge Alvaro
Noronha Ferreira, advocates MS Usgaonkar and Bruto da Costa and Secretary
(Law) Shetye have been engaged in the work of translating and improving the
Portuguese Civil Code, existing in the State. (GT)

ADMINISTRATOR FOR RIBANDAR HOUSING SOCIETY: The registrar of cooperative
societies, Goa, has removed the powers of chairman, Mr Nandan Vasant
Pilgaonkar, and members of the managing committee of the Ribandar Residency
Cooperative Housing Society Ltd, Ribandar, and appointed Mr SA Samant as an
administrator to manage the affairs and update the records of the society in
place of existing managing committee with immediate effect, for a period or
6 months. (NT)

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR YOUTH: The Government of India has constituted the
National Commission for Youth under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and
Sports, in order to look into the various issues and problems faced by the
youth, and come out with concrete suggestions and recommendations for the
development of youth. (GT)

PHARMACIES CHANGING: Pharmacies in today's Goa are not working to full
potential, or fulfilling the role they can really play, says a professional
from the field. Goa has approximately 300 pharmacies. (H)

LONDON COLLEGE SEMINAR: Prof Mike Harvey from the City of London College
gave details about various degrees offered by the college at a seminar
organised in association with Queeny Overseas Educational Services at Hotel

STUDENTS SUFFER: It's all fine talk about streamlining and revamping the
educational system in the state. Almost two months have passed since the
reopening of schools. The students of Our Lady of Lourdes High School,
Valpoi, are yet to see the face of their science and mathematics teacher.

KONKANI STAGE PRODUCTIONS: Noted stage artist, Dharmanand Golatkar, said
that the Goan audiences have accepted the Konkani stage productions and
hence there is an added responsibility on the artists to fulfill their
aspirations. Golatkar, who earlier launched the Konkani drama written by the
well-known playwright, Pundalik Naik, titled "Dhanya Devchara", further said
that as such the artists should not compromise on any level while performing

SARDINE-SKID: Tonnes of sardines lay scattered on the National Highway No.17
at Godeavoli near Bendulem as a truck laden with the fish skidded and fell
right on the road on Monday morning.Sardines and other variety of fish is
imported into Goa from places like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
during this season given the ban on fishing here. (H)

PURSE LEFT BEHIND: CISF officials attached to the Dabolim airport have
launched a search, as they are trying to track a woman who has apparently
left behind her purse carrying a huge amount. (H)

SALDANHA TO BE FETED: On the occasion of its 22nd anniversary celebrations,
the Ponda Journalist Association will felicitate Ludgero Saldanha, Assistant
Information Officer of the Department of Information and Publicity. (GT)

BHARATI SECURES SECOND PLACE: Bharati Subhash Chowgule, of Ponda, stood
second in the Bachelor in Journalism examination conducted by Tilak
Maharashtra Vidyapith, Pune, in June this year. Bharati scored 62.70 per
cent, appearing through the Goa centre. (H)

PANCH KIDNAPPED: In a bid to foil moves to dislocate Curdi Sarpanch Deepak
Narvekar, against whom a no-confidence motion was filed recently by four of
the seven members of the panchayat, a group of panchas have reportedly
'taken' one of the signatories to the motion and his whereabouts are not

DEAD BODY RECOVERED: Bicholim police recovered a dead body from the banks of
Tikhajan river, Mayem, yesterday. (GT)

SEVEN YEARS FOR RAPING MINOR: The Additional Sessions Court has convicted
Manuel Fernandes from Verna on charges of statutory rape and sentenced him
to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment. Manuel was charged of
raping a 14-year-old from Cortalim on 27 September 2000. (GT)

HELD FOR RAPING A MINOR: Porvorim police on Tuesday arrested Babu alias
Ranjit Nayak (19) of Orissa, but presently residing at Sangolda, in
connection with the rape of a minor girl. (H)

MOPA AIRPORT: The government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with
the International Civil Aviation Organisation regarding preparation of a
feasibility report and the tendering of the proposed international airport
at Mopa, Pernem. An amount of Rs.2.6 crore would be paid to the agency
towards the preparation of the feasibility report. (GT)

CORRECTION PENDING FOR SEVEN YEARS: It is often said that justice delayed is
justice denied. In the case of JC D'Souza from Assagao, a retired Joint
Secretary to the Government of Maharashtra, a written order seems to have
eluded him for a number of years. D'Souza had filed an application under the
Land Revenue Code seeking correction the survey records pertaining to his
ancestral property before the deputy collector in 1996. (H)

PM OF LESOTHO: The Prime Minister of Lesotho, Pakalitha Bethuel Mosisili,
accompanied by his spouse Mathathao Mosisili and a 16-member delegation,
will arrive in Goa on 2 August for a two-day visit. During his stay,
Mosisili will call on Governor Kidar Nath Sahani at Raj Bhavan and visit the
church complex at Old Goa on 2 August. The dignitaries will visit 'Ancestral
Goa' at Loutulim on the same day. (GT)
