Dear Senhor Colaco, That Nehru loved White women was never a secret. His aunt Vijaylaxmi Pandit is reported to have said," If Jawahar could give Edwina a good time then it was good for her ,and it was good for him." That was his personal choice. Liberating/invading/annexing or whatever of Goa was a political decision that Nehru could neither make or implement alone. The British or the Yankees would have re-liberated us as they did in the Banana republics or Timor or elsewhere. They did not.
Prosperity in Goa may be from Gulf remitances and people(Including Abu Salem,Monica Bedi,Kashmiris and others) may be flocking for Portuguese passports to be treated on par with the whites(at least officially) in the European Union.(Since you have admitted that you are a 'post-invasion ' creature, you would not be entitled to a Portuguese passport by birth.Descent may be,not birth.)That does not change the fact that we have education available in Goa that once required a visit and stay at Lisboa(immortalized by Lorna),Coimbra or Oporto. This was out of the reach of the common man as not all people had the good fortune of being 'advogado' or 'empregado do governo','minero' or such other vocations that got you money. This was not limited to the 'converts' as many would have us believe. Most mine-owners who got huge leases and concessionsfrom the colonial rulers are devout Hindus, even (or mostly) Sarasat Brahmins as Rui recently pointed out to me.Some of them have been honorary consuls for the far from honorary regimes. Even medical doctors lived in penury because their patients had no money till 1961. We have had sufficient doctors in the family to know what the profession meant if there was no 'propriadade e varzia' (which fortunately they had.)That is the story of life before you were born. Affluence of the masses is a post-1961 phenomenen. Today doctors and engineers(all home grown) are amassing wealth that even the later day 'Conde' and 'Viscondes' were/are hardput to achieve. No ,we have not achieved Utopia. All the same,we are better off than under colonial rule. You can say what you want,I can read the autobiography of Karl Marx or Antonio Salazar or Marcel Caetano and walk free. My father was jailed for three months for possessing a copy of Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography,"My experiments with Truth" which he had bought as a student at St.Xavier's College ,Mumbai/Bombaim. The irony of it all was that my father taught at Escola Tecnica run by the government and had entertained some of the policemen/agente who arrested him. That is the difference.I have lived on both sides of 1961 in Goa to know it first hand. ;))))) Saudades, senhor Miguel P.S. My reply is in English because most Goanetters do not follow the ' Lingua da Camoes'. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bernado Colaco" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Interpretation of Indian Tricolour > Pois Miguel, > > Naqueles tempos todos pensava que o Nehru (o gajo > adorava as mulheres brancas) ia salvar a Goa.
