GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 04 Aug 2003 BABUSH, MADKAIKAR TO EMBRACE BJP: Splinter groups of MGP and UGDP met yesterday and formally decided to merge with the BJP. The Sports and Tourism Minister, Mr Mickky Pacheco, who has, as of now, decided not to join the BJP, did not attend the joint meeting. (H)
"NO ILL-FEELING TOWARDS PACHECO": The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday made it clear that he had no ill-feeling towards the Tourism Minister, Mr Francisco Pacheco, for his decision to have a second thought over joining the BJP. He clarified that irrespective of any development, Mr Pacheco would retain his present position. (NT) MAJORDA YOUTH SURVIVES ORDEAL IN GULF WATERS: Charles D'Silva braved the choppy waters of the Arabian Sea for two days and two nights after his ship capsized off Bahrain. A resident of Majorda and a trained cadet at NUSI Maritime Academy, D'Silva was sailing on his maiden voyage. "For nearly two days, I was in a small inflated rubber cubicle (something like a canoe) alongwith 23 other crew members after the giant cargo ship gave into the rough Arabian sea," he said. (GT) TO EXPOSE CONGRESS MISDEEDS: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, yesterday said that the State government would release a white paper on the Economic Development Corporation within 10 days, hinting that the paper would expose various misdeeds of the previous Congress government in stripping the Corporation of its prestige. (NT) HIKE IN STAMP DUTY: The government's recent decision to impose stamp duty of 2.5 per cent on transfer of properties owned by housing societies has evoked sharp criticism from the general public. The Under Secretary (Revenue) by order dated 10 July this year, imposed 2.5 per cent stamp duty in addition to the already existing two per cent for registration of conveyance deed. (GT) "IT'S MUCK TREATMENT FOR PANJIMITES": It is difficult to fathom the quantum of muck that must have gone into the system of Panjimites as also tourists via the tap water. Callousness is the word. For, this may not be the first time that sewage has seeped into the taps of households and commercial establishments in the capital city of Goa. What is still worse is that such a phenomenon (sic) could occur in this No.1 State of the Indian Union and, that too, sans protests. (Edit in GT) SAL, WHERE DISCRIMINATIONS STILL EXISTS: Sal, a village in the Bicholim taluka, is modestly blessed with public transport, potable water, electricity and agriculture is still a leading occupation. And yet, here, in India's numero uno state, when Vagho Pavaar has tea in any of the dozen eateries, he is served the brew either in a 'kotti' (coconut shell) or if he is lucky, in a cup exclusively reserved for 'mahars'. Vagho (42), is the village's last mahar drummer (sadhaopi). His work involves hollering out announcements of public interest. (Mayabhusan Nagvenkar) NEW ROAD WASHED AWAY: The newly constructed road at Tishem (Ponda) has been washed out by the rains. The road is full of pot holes and poses a danger to motorists. (GT) SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF CARAMBOLIM LAKE: The government should not spend any money, when salt water from Cumbharjua canal can be easily introduced in the lake from the sluice gate under the road, near the western corner of the lake, close to the village. The stored saline water kills the unwanted weeds. Then the sluice gates could be opened at low tide and the full organics load could be drained out the Cumbharjua Canal. Locals need to be questioned by the vigilance, revenue, forest and agriculture officials about discontinuation of this practice. Why should the government engage labour at Rs.150 per day to manually clear the weeds? (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT) INFLATION TOUCHES FISCAL'S LOWEST: The annual rate of inflation dropped marginally by 0.06 per cent to finish the week ending July 19 at 4.59 per cent, this fiscal's lowest-ever. However, inflation, which fell below the five per cent mark for the first time this fiscal during the week ended June 14, was only 2.86 per cent a year ago. A major reason for the fall this week, was the decline in the index of primary articles which fell by 0.6 per cent to 180.0 from last week's level, mainly because of reduction in the prices of food articles. (NT) ANTI-WITCHCRAFT LAWS: In an effort to put a stop to curb superstition and witchcraft, the Maharashtra government plans to introduce a law to put an end to such practices, the first of its kind in the country.
