From: Simon D'Silva Date: Thursday, August 14, 2003 12:06:10 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: G.O.A., QATAR TO PROMOTE KONKANI ON WORLD GOA DAY In solidarity with Goans and various organizations all over the world, celebrating the 4th World Goa Day which is officially held on 20th August. This day marks the 12th Anniversary of the Konkani Language being included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, when in 1992, the two Houses of the Indian Parliament unanimously voted and approved an amendment, thus according it national status. The Goan Overseas Association (GOA), Qatar is organizing "WORLD GOA DAY" on 20th August 2003 with the Holy Mass offered at 7.00 p.m. at the Parish Centre and thereafter officially launching a Konkani Language course to their community at 8.00 p.m. at the Doha Palace Hotel. This year the theme is "Giving Back to Goa". It is a day to remind the community that they have a language of their own - Konkani, the Goan Identity, no matter what nationality they posses or what languages they may know. At least at home and in the community they should make use of it - speak in Konkani. And if they have not done it before, let the World Goa Day 2003 should serve as an occasion to learn and speak the language. Konkani is a richer language than many other languages, reveals the Goan Overseas Association, Qatar in a press release to their community. Writing in the official website of World Goa Day, Mr. Rene Barretto, Convenor of the event from U.K., says, "On Goa Day this year thousands of Goans will once again remind themselves of the need to work to preserve our culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for our children, the non-Goan community, and for posterity". GOA DAY this year is being celebrated in a BIGGER way than ever before. Goans in U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Tanzania, Africa, and some countries in the Middle East including Qatar are celebrating it in Solidarity.
