Dear Netters, Last summer when I went to Nanu's Beach Resort, I was impressed by the fact that there were cycles on hire available to the tourists (mostly Japanes and Russian,I think)to explore the areas beyond the beach front at a leisurely pace. As school and Higher Secondary students we had done just that ( for want of motorcycles,of course!) I have wonderful memories of those days. I have also encouraged my children to walk and cycle around. Hope to do more of that after the rains peter off.
Last May I discussed with Sanjit Rodrigues, the dynamic Commissioner of CCP, the possibility of making 18 June Road in Panaji an exclusive cycling and pedestrian street from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. .It has parallel roads on either side for movement of vehicles of those who would rather not cycle or walk more than a few metres. We would need cycle kiosks at two or more points along the road for people to pick up and deposit the cycles. It is an idea that needs to be tossed around. The side lanes of the GMC to Kala Academy road ,and the link via Pharmacy College- Shanta building at St.Inez ,could be added to this. This could then be linked via boca-da-vaca to Altinho(Fr.Agnelo Road) and even to Corte de Oitero and Fontainhas, leaving Rua de Ourem for the vehicles. For the older people/cyclists a link could be kept via Pastelaria and Singbal book shop to Fontainhas/Mala. Bhatulem and Taleigao are not too far away. If the whole system is in place and there is a cycle kiosk near Prema Building near the walk bridge, the load on the city buses could be drastically reduced. Monthly passes could be issued to users, specifying their pick up and deposit points of the cycles. The data could be computerized to plan for optimum utilization of the cycles. May be we can have cycle clubs. We used to have cycles on hire before the craze of the motorcycle pilots overtook us. Can we have yesterday once more. We can learn it from the Brits. ON PEDALS It took a couple of Britons to realise the potential of > packaging the simple back-to-basics charms of India's smallest state. > Cyclegoa is a new initiative to be run in the coming tourist season by two > British cycling enthusiasts . Their tours on pedals will take the visitors to the 'real Goa' -- travelling through its small villages, and visiting its bigger towns . Say the duo, who are just about the launch their business: "We will also be visiting many of Goa's places of interest, such as the temples at Ponda, the not to be missed Dudhsagar Falls and the beautiful Paradise beach at Palolem." There is a lot to see and many places to visit in Goa. We are both keen cyclists. During our stay we travelled extensively by bicycle and had some fantastic experiences, travelling through many villages and staying away from the main roads. We saw sights, views and met people that we probably wouldn't have done had we travelled in a taxi. This inspired us to want to share in our experiences in beautiful Goa and so the idea of a cycling touring holiday of Goa began. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Would it be viable? Yes. We believe it to be a viable option. Adventure holidays are in a state of growth within the holiday industry. Also there are no other companies, > that we are aware of, running cycling tours in Goa. Hopefully this will make us unique in the market place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > What is the interest level you anticipate? > We expect it to be quite high. Cycling is quite a popular sport within the > UK with every town having its own cycling club. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
