Ahmedabad, Aug 28 (IANS) At least nine school children died Thursday when a
Portuguese-built bridge over a river crashed in the union territory of Daman
and Diu, plunging several vehicles into the fast-flowing waters.

The bridge over the Daman Ganga came down at around 1.00 p.m. when some
two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and a car were passing over it. All these
vehicles fell into the river.

Fishermen jumped into the river and rescued about 10 school students.

They retrieved the bodies of nine children too.

"The rescue operation is on. We have recovered some bodies but more people
are feared dead," Daman municipality president Vishal Tandel told IANS over
telephone from Daman, about 400 km south or here.

Witnesses said more than 25 people may have died in the disaster.

The bridge was very old and badly in need of repair, according to sources.

The bridge, made by the Portuguese, links the adjoining localities of Nani
Daman and Moti Daman.

A 90-metre portion of the 300-metre long, narrow and one-way bridge has
fallen in the river.
