Would appreciate if Gilbert Lawrence could give me some references for further research on this topic of the 'six Goan families'. My studies show that many Goan Hindu families did migrate to Mangalore because of religious persecution by the Portuguese. But no mention is made of Catholic families migrating.

To the best of my knowledge the Manglorean Catholics have no Goan origins. They were converted by Portuguese (and other) evangelists in the Konkan. As were the 'East Indians' who were locals (Hindus) who were working for The East India Company at the time they were converted to the Catholic faith.

I could be wrong.
