CHILDLESS WIDOWS ENTITLED TO HUSBAND'S ASSETS: The right of representation should hold equally good for a widow of a man, who pre-deceased his parents when it comes to a share in the communion of inherited assets as it does when it comes to children inheriting rights. This was strongly demanded at a workshop on the review of Family Law held in Panaji yesterday. Organised by the Bailancho Saad, the workshop was organised to allow the NGOs working in the fields of social justice to voice their concerns in their respective areas in connection with the review of the Family Law. (H) FEASIBILITY STUDY OF GOLF COURSE: The Goa government yesterday signed an agreement with the UK-based Professional Golfer Association (PGA) Design Consulting Ltd for preparing a feasibility study on the possibility of setting up a 18 holes golf course of international standard in the State. The feasibility study will cost the state government Rs 13.5 lakh which is fully borne by the central government, official sources said. In fact, Rs 6.75 lakh (50 per cent) has already been deposited by the ministry of tourism, GOI, into the state treasury. There is much demand from the high-spending tourists from Europe for a 18-hole golf course in the state, a survey had found. With a golf course, the inflow of foreign tourists will go up, an official stated. (H) 'I WASN'T INVOLVED': Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president and MLA Luizinho Faleiro yesterday demanded to know whether the Economic Development Corporation had issued a White paper. Faleiro reiterated that, even as the then Industries minister, he was neither directly nor indirectly, legally nor morally involved with the affairs of the EDC. (H) LOVER'S ATTEMPT TO KIDNAP BRIDE FOILED: Reliable sources disclosed that when a bride from Madhegat, Cacora, was proceeding towards the wedding hall in a decorated car along with other family members, a youth from Quepem, who was friendly with the bride, tried to stop the car with the help of his accomplices at Bansai, Cacora, and tried to kidnap the bride. However, hearing the shouts of the inmates in the car, the local people ran to their rescue and foiled the bid to kidnap the bride. (GT) ONE HELD FOR DUPING JOB SEEKER: Porvorim police has arrested Prashant Shaba Narvekar (28) of Porvorim on charges of duping one Deshraj Kambaz, by promising him a job abroad. In a police complaint, Deshraj, a native of Nainital but presently staying at PDA colony in Porvorim, said he along with three others approached Narvekar, in connection with job opportunities in Singapore. Narvekar had allegedly collected a sum of Rs 2 lakh from the four persons and assured them of a job in Singapore. (H) COP HELD FOR ASSAULT: A cop attached to the Goa Reserve Police at Panjim along with two others from Sawantwada-Canacona were arrested by Canacona police on Wednesday on charges of assaulting one Mahesh Dessai of Char Rasta on September 8. While Manoj Sawant and Mahesh U Sawant were arrested on Tuesday night, the policeman Nitin B Sawant was arrested on Wednesday. (H) PREGNANT WIFE, SPINSTER COMMIT SUICIDE: A three months pregnant woman from Valkeshwarwada-Betim and a 71-year-old spinster from Belsurwado in Sao Mathias (Divar) committed suicide on Wednesday. The first incident occurred on Wednesday morning, in which the 23-year-old housewife, Sarika alias Pinky Ajay Kataria, a native of Londa, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in her residence at Valkeshwarwada-Betim. In the second incident, the 71-year-old spinster from Belsurwado in Sao Mathias (Divar) committed suicide on Wednesday evening, by jumping near a sluice gate at Murdi in Sao Mathias. Old Goa police said Luciana Almeida, an ex-nurse of Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim, was mentally disturbed for the past three years. (H) NO TRUST MOVE AGAINST COLVA SARPANCH: Eight out of the nine Colva Panchayat members signed a no-confidence motion against the lady sarpanch, Anne Mascarenhas. (GT) CEMENT ROAD FOR MARGAO: The Associated Cement Company (ACC) on Wednesday submitted an official proposal to the Margao Municipality to take up road construction in the city, at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The company, which has come out with an innovative mixture of cement and asphalt, has offered to construct a five-kilometer road and to maintain the same for a period of five years. The stretch of road to be taken up for construction is the Caro corner to Power House, Aquem; Holy Spirit Church to Collectorate building and the entire road surrounding the Margao Municipal building and garden. The civic body has agreed to get back to the company after complying with the due procedure. (H) MEMORIAL OF GOVERNOR LIES FORGOTTEN: Less than 150 metres away from the memorial of the first chief minister of Goa Dayanand Bandodkar, lies the memorial of the second governor of Goa, much forgotten and neglected for decades. Late governor Mulk Raj R Sachdev had served Goa as governor from September 2, 1963, and was the one and only governor who died in Goa while in office on December 8, 1964. Nearly four decades have lapsed now and the mausoleum erected in his memory and located just behind Foodland on Miramar beach, is in shambles, the plaque with his name barely visible and the pathway leading to the memorial hardly trodden upon. (H) TURBID WATERS IN OLD GOA: Residents of Old Goa were in for a shock yesterday, when turbid water flowed out of taps in their homes. With the epidemic-like spread of jaundice in Panaji, after sewage entered the water pipeline. Old Goa residents are taking no chances. (GT) BODY FOUND: The body of an unknown male of about 45 years was found in the bushes near the bus stop at Teen building, Porvorim, on Wednesday afternoon. Porvorim police said a slip of paper was found in the pocket of the deceased, which indicated that the person, identified as Laxman, had undertaken treatment in the Asilo hospital at Mapusa.The body was later sent to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim for an autopsy. (H) SARPANCHAS TO DEMAND REVIVAL OF CENTRAL HOSPITAL: It is not often that sarpanchas representing as many as 10 panchayats spread over the four talukas of Sanguem, Ponda, Sattari and Bicholim come together for a non-political purpose. But when they did, it was to demand the revival of the Central Hospital at Tisca with its full capacity to the miners and non-miners residing in the 10 panchayats. The 10 sarpanchas of the panchayats of Collem, Sancordem, Mollem, Darbandoda, Kirlapale-Dabal, Usgao-Ganje, Khotedem-Gavanem, Guleli, Khandepar and Khtombi-Pale at a recent meeting have decided to meet Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, to demand the restarting of the Central Hospital with well-equipped facilities. (H) GOVT TO GO AHEAD WITH PROPOSAL ON PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: With very few suggestions/objections being received for introducing special holidays (SH) substituting six public holidays for the state government employees, the government is expected to go ahead with its proposal from next year. The time period for inviting suggestions/objections from government employees ended yesterday evening. With very few suggestions/objections being received over circular it has indicated that majority employees have agreed to the proposal and government would go ahead with it from next year. (NT) HC NOTICE TO AGCCSJA MEMBER: Deprecating the attitude of addressing personal communications to the judges by those who are not parties in a sub-judice matter, the Panaji bench of Bombay High Court has directed the issuance of notice of criminal contempt to Mr M K Jos of All Goa Citizens Committee for Social Justice and Action (AGCCSJA), to show cause as to why he should not be punished for committing criminal contempt of the court.
