Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 12th September will feature the topic, Is tourism in Goa a driving force for poverty alleviation, job creation & social harmony?
As part of a series on public interest issues Friday Balcao will focus on the World Tourism Day 2003 theme in the context of Goa.
Goa has seen the phenomenal growth of tourism in the last four decades. From being the popular holiday destination for the average domestic and foreign tourist, Goa is sort to be developed as a special zone so as to cater to high spending foreign tourists.
Over the years many decisions related to the Tourism Master Plan have been taken, what role has small business & the local panchayats played in shaping the tourism master plan and has there been a tourism policy for Goa ?
Have the negative and positive impacts of tourism been studied by Government and the trade, to what extent have international market decisions affected tourism in Goa.
The Balcao discussion will examine these issues in the context of the experiences of various stakeholders. The discussion will be moderated by Alito Sequeira of the Sociology Department, Goa University.

Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public.
Those citizens who would like to receive the regular invitation to Friday Balcao and a one page synopsis of the fortnightly session can subscribe for the same by sending Rs.80/- to cover printing and mailing costs.
