GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 10 Sep 2003 600 CHARTER FLIGHTS COMING: Goa is all set for this year's tourist season as nearly 600 charter flights are expected to arrive in the state. Though the tourism season starts from 27 September, on the occasion of the International Tourist Day, the Tourism department, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation and the hoteliers are gearing up for the season by undertaking renovation works. Last year, about 350 charters had arrived in Goa, mostly from Britain, Finland, Norway and Russia. (GT)
WATER BY PRIVATE TANKER BANNED: The State government has decided to ban supply of water by private tankers from sources other than PWD in view of fears over water contamination in some wells in Panaji. It is learnt that the ban will initially be enforced in the capital city and surrounding areas. The government has also cautioned the people against consuming water supplied by private tankers following the presence of E Coli bacteria in some well water samples tested in the city and surrounding areas. (GT) DEMENTIA A PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN: Prevalence of dementia is emerging as a public health concern in the state as nearly 3 per cent of Goa's population above the age of 60 seems to be suffering from this disease. (NT) DOWRY CASE: The Old Goa police have registered an offence against two persons for harassing and demanding dowry from a woman. Police said that Jose Philip D'Silva and Fausto D'Silva allegedly harassed Christiana D' Silva, Jose's wife, and forced her to leave the house for failing to get sufficient dowry. (H) JAUNDICE CASES WILL DROP TO ZERO: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said that the number of jaundice cases regularly detected at the Goa Medical College hospital have presently reduced to 2 cases per day and expressed confidence that they would drop down to zero by September 15. The dissenting members have cited separate reasons for seeking the ouster of the sarpanch and his deputy. (GT) ACCIDENT NEWS: In a case of rash and negligent driving reported in Margao, a truck dashed against a house at Gogol and caused damage to the tune of Rs.20,000, besides causing injuries to the inmates. At Quelossim, Xelvon, Suresh Rama Chowgule had a narrow escape when a kerosene laden tanker crashed into his house, while the driver Rama Chandra Yadav was trying to give right of way to an oncoming vehicle. However, being too close to the edge of the road, the vehicle toppled twice before crashing into the house. At Porrascode in Pernem, in a head on collision of a truck and a motorcycle one person died while the other was seriously injured. In Benaulim, Jose Fernandes, 57, a resident of river Sal Estate, Benaulim, expired at the Goa Medical College & Hospital, Bambolim, while undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in an accident. At Goa Velha, the Agacaim police have registered a case against one Elvis Dias of Goa Velha, for driving his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and for causing injuries two pedestrians-Santan Gonsalves and Fazal Iqbal. At the same police station was reported another accident in which Premabai Phadte (60) of Parra, was injured in a road accident. (GT) ONE CONSUMES POISON, DIES: Suraj Murgaonkar, 25, of Tonca-Caranzalem, who had consumed poison, died at the GMC. (GT) MAID HANGS TO DEATH: Shainaz, a 20-year-old maid from Chimbel, near Panjim, but employed at Ravabhat-Sirvoi in Quepem, committed suicide by hanging herself to the ceiling fan in her bedroom. (H) CULTURAL SHOW BY KA, DD: Kala Academy and Doordarshan Kendra, Panaji, will jointly organise a cultural show at the Kala Academy on 11 September at 6 pm, as part of Doordarshan's anniversary celebrations. The cultural show will consist of traditional Goan folk dances, music and other folk forms. (GT) CANOES AT RIVER SAL: Canoes are back in action ferrying commuters across River Sal between Assolna and Cavelossim as the lone ferry service lay grounded since the last 20 days. Says Captain of Ports, AP Mascarenhas, "We cannot replace the ailing ferry boat immediately. The prevailing weather condition does not permit the department to take a new ferry to Assolna through the sea." (H) THIRD US PATENT FOR DR KALPANA: Dr Kalpana Joshi, reader of SP College, Pune, has been awarded a third United States patent for "Apparatus and method for measuring and monitoring complex permittivity of materials". Dr Joshi, who did her PhD in Electrical Engineering from Leeds University (UK) in 1994, had bagged two US patents earlier in 2001 and 2002. (GT) DIRECT SAINTHOOD: The Vatican considered breaking with centuries of tradition by making Mother Teresa of Calcutta a saint in one sweep, bypassing the intermediate step of beautification, church sources said yesterday. They said that earlier this year, Vatican officials gave what one source called "serious consideration" to the possibility of putting the nun, who died in 1997, on the fast track to sainthood.
