The Govt. has just invited applications for setting up shacks for the coming
holiday season, and notified that 45 shacks can be set up at Calangute and
25 at Candolim. Surely these numbers are excessive for the 6 km. stretch of
these 2 beaches combined, and will result in excessive bunching and
environmental degradation. A similar length of beach at Colva/Benaulim has
been allowed18 shacks, which appears to be a reasonable number. If the
Govt. was serious to keep the beaches clean and manageable, it should reduce
the licences in the North by about 10% every year, until the right balance
is achieved. This will also result in better business for those who are
running the fewer shacks.
regards, Gilbert Menezes.
