Mehtab Jahan Bukhari is a silent worker. Without much ado she has completed her research on Arbuscular Mycorrhiza[a beneficial association of fungus(mycos) and plant roots(rhizos) ] suitable for re-vegetating [or aforestation of] mining dumps and wastelands in Goaand elsewhere. While a lot has been written about mycorrhizae, it is refreshing to note what has actually been done ! Mehtab's research findings have been accepted for award of a doctorate in Botany to her by the Goa University.
The Botanical Society of Goa is proud of the achievement of two of its members in this research work. Dr.Bernard Felinov Rodrigues,Reader in Botany at Goa University[ and himself a Ph.D. in Botany associated with mining wastelands with many post-doctoral projects and research papers] was Mehtab's guide for Ph.D. He has been honoured by BSG on having been selected Young Scientist of the Year in 1998. Mehtab has been a member of the Exective Committee of BSG for the term 1998-2002 and was instrumental in promoting field visits for student and adult members to Azobachi Raim [sacred grove]in Kerim-Sattari and other places. She is an enthusiatic, jovial person and a pleasure to have as company in organizing and executing events. I have had the good fortune to have her in the BSG Executive during my second term as its Secretary. Mehtab is a lecturer and Head of Botany Department at Government College,Quepem-Goa, and guides students upto the M.Sc. level.
