FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The beginning of a new academic year at Xavier's is an occasion for the
implementation of new initiatives which were planned much in advance before
the end of the previous academic year. Special significance is attached to
this year since the College is completing forty years and Ruby Jubilee
celebrations were kicked off with the inaugural session on August 9, 2003.

Four issues of Xavierwrite will be brought out during the academic year and
the respective editorial teams have been selected. All these issues will
carry a supplement of our Higher Secondary School.

As we said in the past, these issues are meant for our stakeholders
specially our students, their parents, teachers and the community at large.
Many times the copy remains with the student and the parents don't get a
chance to follow from a distance the formative steps in the life of their
children. This year we had an opportunity to offer personally one copy to
the parents at the time of admission. This was possible because all the
1800 students were provided a chance to meet the Principal along with their
parents and in their absence with their guardian. Though the exercise was
time consuming and tiring for some parents as well as for me, it was a
rewarding experience that was appreciated by the parents. This was an
occasion to meet the student and parents personally, to listen to their
difficulties and appreciation as well as to provide scholarship forms to the
needy ones.

This meeting was preceded by a counselling session conducted by faculty
members, one-to-one, in order to guide the admission seekers in the
selection of their subjects.

The prospectus that was appreciated by all is comparable to international
standards and is a team effort to market the College here and abroad. All
these efforts are possible because the College can boast of a resourceful
faculty and equally resourceful student community backed by a supporting
administrative team.

Well Begun Is Half Done

"Without the grace of God, man cannot scale great heights. Though we may be
experts in our subjects, we need to constantly call on the Lord's help or
else our work will not be fruitful. This is especially true in the
educational arena where we strive to shape the lives of the youth", said
Archbishop-Patriarch Dr. Raul Gonsalves in his homily during the Eucharistic
Celebration at the inaugural of the academic year 2003-2004. The liturgy of
the Holy Mass was organized by the AICUF on the theme "With the Lord as our
guide, let us venture into 2003-2004 with confidence".

Later, during the cultural programme Principal Newman Fernandes reminded the
audience that education is a mission; it should not be restricted only to
preparation for examinations. In fact, it should be geared towards
preparing students for life. Values and value education should pervade the
academic arena, he added.

The academic year was inaugurated in a traditional manner with the lighting
of the lamp.

In her address, Ms. Annie Fernandes, Head of the Department of Sociology,
assured the freshers that the teaching faculty of the college is guided by
the singular objective of helping every student to attain greatness in life.
While listing the various opportunities provided by the college, she called
for every resource to be utilised for personality development. She advised
the students to learn from successes and failures. "Our greatest glory is
in rising after every fall", she said.

Ms Faminda D'Souza of TYBSc welcomed the students of the First Year and
exhorted them to ceaselessly strive in order to rise higher and thereby keep
alive the traditions of the college.

Recalling that the College was established keeping in mind the needs of the
times the Archbishop-Patriarch assured all support to the College in its
endeavours,. "The growth of the college is a source of great joy to the
Archdiocese", he said.

Dr Ramita Gurav was also honoured for being awarded a doctorate by Goa
University. Her work was a Detailed Study of Contemporary Hindi Theatre,
"Samkaleen Hindi Rangmanch Ka Anushilan".

SUCCESS

Success is in the way you walk
The paths of life each day;
It's in the little things you do
And in the things you say
Success is not in getting rich
Or rising high to fame
It's not alone in winning goals
Which all men hope to claim
Success is being big at heart
And clean and broad of mind
It's being faithful to your friends
And to strangers, kind
It's in the children you love
And all they learn from you
Success depends on character
And everything you do.

ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE

Under the auspices of the Research and Development Cell, Dr. Ramita Gurav
delivered a talk on 24th July 2003 on "Theatre in Education". She used the
opportunity to compare theatre with the learning and teaching process. "An
actor performing on the stage can be compared to a teacher who does his act
(teaching) before students", she said. But while actors perform in the
well-arranged environment of an auditorium aided by costumes, light and
sound effects, music and a properly designed set, the teacher has to make do
with no such special props. Proper knowledge of the topic, coupled with the
use of right language and wit go a long way in enhancing the effectiveness
of the teacher. While emphasizing the importance of using audio-visual
aids, she highlighted the need for proper involvement of mind, body and soul
in order to be successful in both teaching and acting.

SUMMER COURSES

Colleges should be centres of learning and excellence. They need to function
beacons radiating the light of knowledge to the neighbourhood and to
society. Keeping this in mind, the college organized courses during the
summer vacation of the year 2003. The college faculty ably conducted these
courses with the whole-hearted assistance of the non-teaching staff. Almost
all courses were 'over-subscribed' - i.e. the number of participants was in
excess of the planned capacity. But successful efforts were made to
accommodate all applicants. The fees charged were nominal.

So very diversified but yet so wonderful
Varied in its habitats and morphology

May seem pure but isn't powerless
Seeing as an obligate intracellular parasite to fulfill its needs,
No matter how the host is affected by its selfish deeds.
The blue-green algae are our very own ancestors,
Generators of an oxygenic environment, the earth's earliest inhabitors.

Streptomyces, being more compatible lives in conjunction,

SARDINE TIN - A LOCAL BUS

Most of us travel by bus almost daily. Those who don't, won't understand
the JOY of it. Ha! Actually travelling by bus is the last thing one would
ask for, especially in Goa. There's just no order or hard and fast rule for
discipline in buses. You are literally forced to climb a bus that's already
looking like a sardine tin. And when you are in, you become an extra
sardine. I guess even sardines are packed quite comfortably in a tin, but
not humans in our local buses.

First, you battle to step into the bus, then once you are in, you don't know
where your arms are nor the positions occupied by your feet. (Oh! It's so
stuffy) You get squeezed and quashed as if you were supposed to be juiced
up. You sometimes get blows and dashes and most of the time you cannot blame
a person even if he does it on purpose. You rarely get a seat. It's a
torture to travel by bus, I would say. The conductor just uses his
stereotyped dialogue that includes the famous "Fati Vosath, Fati Vosath"
But, what else does he know? Oh, Yah! To collect the cash from you!

You are impulsed to the last seat and when you want to get off the bus, you
have got to propel yourself through the massive crowd. Most of our local
buses have vibrating windows and when the buses walk the ramp (road, that
is) they jitter as if a woman of ninety years were modelling. Okay, not all
buses are like that, but almost all. You are sometimes prone to doing a
tango inside or a sort of jerky dance (or a brake dance, when the brakes are
suddenly applied)

Those travelling by buses must be aware of the competition that goes on, on
the roads. Each bus wants to reach ahead of the other to win more
passengers and sometimes in this attempt are responsible for causing
collisions.

Anyway, you can't really help it, cause that's the way it's always been and
probably will always be. (You'll always remain a sardine - hee, hee!)

THE LIFE OF A LABOURER

Toiling day and night on foot,
Long hours each day he puts
He gets a meager sum as reward,
Yet undampened he moves forward.

He is but a lonely man,
Struggling to do all he can.
Nobody ever cares about his being,
In his possession are worthless things.

A poor, weak labourer is he,
A burden in this world to be.
Exploited, cursed and oppressed,
The man's left totally depressed.

Living a hand to mouth existence
Yet the desire to survive is persistent.
Each new day is a struggle,
But boldly he faces his troubles.

His dreams are of a future bright,
For he knows that a dawn will follow the night.
Hoping the future will bring the best,
Peacefully in a corner he rests.

THE FRUIT OF LOVE IS SERVICE

Many a student is forced to drop out of regular school due to a host of
causes. The concept of the community college, with its flexi-timings and
flexi-courses, can come to the aid of such students.

During the three-day workshop on "New Paths in Higher Education" the concept
was explained in an inspiring manner by Rev. Dr. Xavier Alphonse, s.j.,
former principal of Loyola College, Chennai.

A team of four lecturers viz. Dr. B.C. Nair (Dept of Mathematics), Mr.
Conceicao D'Souza (Dept of Botany), Ms. Santana Fernandes (Dept. of
Commerce) and Mr. Daryl Gonsalves (Dept of Electronics) attended the Tenth
Teachers' Training Programme for Community Colleges from 9th June to 14th
June 2003. Madras Centre for Research and Development of Community
Education (MCRDCE) organized the programme. The participant-lecturers were
provided an opportunity for interaction with teachers of various community

Based on inputs received during the training programme, the Cell is actively
working to introduce various courses for the community during this academic
year. So watch out for further details!

the teaching community to make the learning of grammar a pleasant experience
by the use of examples culled from daily living.

The post-lunch session was devoted to discussions based on the various
problems encountered while teaching the syllabus.

In his remarks, Principal Newman Fernandes appreciated the efforts of the
organizers. "Language can be properly studied only if its grammar is

COUNSELLING CELL CORNER

In its endeavour to promote and create awareness about the many issues,
whether social or individual which influence us, the Counselling Cell, in
this maiden venture, will address those problems. A regular column will be
inserted in every issue of Xavierwrite. The column will address the issues
faced by students and give guidelines on resolving or overcoming the same.

Students who wish to have their problems addressed directly in the
Xavierwrite, can henceforth write to the Counselling Cell and drop the note
in the mailbox at the Postgraduate Department of Psychology.

In this issue let us focus on 'Broken Relationships'. College students
being at the threshold of hormonal changes, attraction towards members of
the opposite sex is inevitable and the idea of having a 'girlfriend' or
'boyfriend' sounds very tempting. One must remember firstly, that in any
relationship mutual respect and commitment to the other person is important.
As students grow into mature adults, they will face tremendous changes in
choices, opinions and circumstances. What was attractive and important in
student days, may not remain so, once out of college. Hence, while it is
important to interact and form many friendships, it is better to reserve the
commitment to a relationship, later in life. This way, one will not have
expectations from the other, and will be free at the same time to meet
different people, picking the best for oneself. This does not imply one can
have 'testing' friendships, if a certain friend does not fall within one's
expectancy of a future partner. The fairy tale romance that movies and
songs portray are just that - fairy tale romances. One has to remember that
in a real-life situation, a relationship will call for many adjustments and
compromises from both partners. This can be possible only when both
partners have very stable and mature personalities.

Many a time, more than being in love, the young generation is maybe more in
love with the idea of being in love. Therefore, one has to protect oneself,
from getting into a heart-breaking relationship in the first place. Those
who have been there can be assured that time is the best healer, if one
allows oneself to be healed. Cherish the good times of a relationship and
move on. Anger directed at the one who has broken up, is difficult to let
go. But the only way to be set free from such a 'wronged relationship' is
to forgive the other person. Forgiveness does not set free the other person
free from the wrongdoing, but rather sets you free from being the 'victim'
of the wrongdoing. It is difficult to forgive, but it is possible. Forgive
but be cautious the next time around.

St. Xavier's College was established by the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman in
1963. Hence this year, it has completed forty years of existence during
which it has grown in stature and strength.

The Ruby Jubilee celebrations of the college commenced on 9th August 2003
with a solemn Eucharistic Celebration. The Archbishop-Patriarch Msgr. Raul
Gonsalves was the main celebrant of the Holy Mass which was based on the
theme "With One Another For Another". In his homily, Dr. Gonsalves stressed
that life, like every other journey, needs preparation both for the body and
the soul. The College has been established to prepare young students to
fully and properly shoulder their responsibilities to society.

The cultural programme was a indeed showcasing of the multiple talents
inherent in students. It was interspersed with speeches by the dignitaries.

In his welcome address, Principal Newman Fernandes reminded the audience of
the need to replace selfishness with altruism. "Hence, education should
also contain a value-based component. In this respect, St. Xavier's College
has never been found wanting", he said. He briefly outlined the various
activities that have been planned for the year. He also unveiled the
various infrastructural facilities that are sought to be added at the
campus. He stressed on the need of planning and introducing new courses
with an eye on future requirements of society.

Alumni of the first batch were felicitated on the occasion. Ms Mimi
Menezes, an alumna, took the audience down memory lane while recalling her
college experiences. "My alma mater prepared me to face life. I am
successful only due to the guidance by my teachers", she added.

In his address, the Chief Guest, Dr. Bailon de Sa reminisced his association
with late Rev. Dr. Nicolau Pereira, former principal of the college. While
acknowledging the immense contributions made by the college to the
educational scene in Goa, he hoped that the college would not rest upon its
past laurels but continue to grow and glow. He also released the College
Magazine. "The projects envisaged by the college, though seemingly
ambitious, are attainable provided everyone strives towards the common
goal", he said.

Stating the college occupied a place of pride in the educational set-up of
the Archdiocese, the Archbishop-Patriarch urged the staff and students to
continue the good work.

A PowerPoint presentation was a noteworthy feature on the occasion. The
audience was allowed glimpses of various facets of the college right from
its inception to the present time.

CAN WE REALLY CHANGE THE NEWS?

Many of us sit along with our families to watch the news on television. As
we sit there, our comfortable little world is shattered. Just a step away
in the neighboring state, there are riots, people murdering one another just
for a petty sum of money. Staring across our screens are the bewildered
faces of innocent people who are wondering as to why only they need to end
up in hospitals, bruised and hurt all over.

Elsewhere, we can see this man being accused of this scam, corruption in
this government, smuggling in another and the list goes on endlessly.

Man, by nature, has some selfish traits which when translated in social
terms, means no more than the attempts to live better by hook or by crook.
Man, thus breaks the very rules and regulations, which he himself has framed
for the 'maximum good of maximum people'.

Another feature: there is slaughter of wild animals, cutting down of trees.
Mann's greed to get rich quick makes him careless of the fact that the
animals too have a right to live and live happily. And the trees have an
important role to play in environment, saving us from pollution. The poor,
fighting for subsistence and women, for rights; people trying against all
odds to find decent work and earn wages that are rightfully theirs. It all
odds up to a grim picture of the world. Many therefore are inclined to
think that young people like us should not watch the news on television.
What I say, that we are faced with the realities of the world. Our not
watching it, cannot change the news. All this gives us a day-to-day picture
of our world. All we can do is work towards the role we will play when we
begin 'to make' news.

AND THAT'S HOW FRIENDSHIP IS...

All beautiful things begin and end
Leaving myriad memories in the hearts
But only a miracle called friendship
Grows on from the moment it starts
Love and happiness is what it gives
And friendship alone it asks in return
In the lives of those who are lonely
It brings along loads of fun
Friendship teaches to respect and come
To be loyal and patient they say
It helps to build a bond of trust
Which grows stronger each passing day
It strives to deep sweet memories alive
Forgetting all sorrows and pain
Even though friends may have to part
It brings hopes of meeting again
All depressed hearts find solace
Once friendship lays its comforting hand
Such is this miracle called friendship
Which has a beginning but sees no end.

JUST GO ON

When life's a total turmoil,
And you are in complete despair;
Shattered, totally disfigured,
And life seems all dull and bare;
Remember that when dark and gloomy clouds observe the sun;
An overshadow of the rainbow will have the work of darkness undone.
Say a small prayer soon,
And a beacon of hope will conquer the gloom
Many a time when your faith does dim
Be brave and put your full trust in 'Him'
Put aside all frustration and scares,
Keep courage, and dare to bear,
Cause life has its ups and down;
So wipe away those tears and remove those nasty frowns
As life's too .... Short to grope and mourn
And you've got seeds of love and friendship to be sown
Do not be afraid to lose or fail,
Coz life's a vast ocean that you've got sail

WE LIVE TO SERVE

"We owe a great deal to society. And so, we should all strive together for
the betterment of society", said Prof. Newman Fernandes while addressing the
N.S.S. volunteers at their Inaugural function. Drawing a close parallel
between the activities of the N.S.S. and the Ruby Jubilee theme "With One
Another, For Another", he exhorted the volunteers to ceaselessly work for
the upliftment of the downtrodden.

In his speech the Chief Guest, Mr. B. Rajashekar, Head of the Commerce
Department, shared his N.S.S. camping experiences during his tenure as
Programme Officer.

The Programme Officer, Mr. Manoj Salgaonkar, briefly outlined the importance
of the N.S.S. He unveiled the various activities and projects that will be
taken up during the academic year and pledged the active co-operation of the
N.S.S. in ensuring the smooth conduct of Ruby Jubilee celebrations of the
College. He reminded the volunteers of the various opportunities provided
by the N.S.S. in developing and enhancing leadership and other skills.

The activities were formally inaugurated in a traditional manner by the
lighting of the lamp.

An entertaining cultural programme comprising of dances, short skits and a
song followed the formal inaugural.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EATING A MEAL

Three minutes before eating, positive thoughts about food stimulate your
digestion. Your mouth waters and acid and enzymes are produced in the
saliva and stomach. As you chew your food, the starch is digested. About
five minutes later, food passes into the oesophagus (food pipe) and stomach,
where it mixes with acid and enzymes and is broken down over the next two
hours. The greater the amount of fat that a meal contains, the longer it
stays in the stomach. The food then passes into the small intestine, where
it mixes with bile; enzymes and nutrients are absorbed through the intestine
wall. Two hours later, the food starts to enter the colon, where water,
minerals and sugar are extracted. It stays in the colon for about ten hours
before waste products are expelled as faeces.

Sadhbhavana Divas 2003

Sadhbhavana Divas was observed on 20th August 2003. A meaningful
prayer service was the highlight of the occasion. A PowerPoint
presentation was used to drive home the message that a wide
disparity exists between the Divine Will and human living. This
results in avoidable chaos, confusion and suffering. Students read
from the sacred scriptures of the three major faiths viz. the Holy
Bible, the Quran and the Bhagvad Gita. The readings pointed to the
fact that all religions preach goodness and unity. Prayers were
offered for peace, oneness and justice.

A cultural programme was also organized to felicitate our Hindu
brethren on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. It comprised of a
skit, songs and dance. In his address Principal Newman Fernandes
strongly exhorted everyone to imbibe the spirit of unity and
brotherhood. If our lives are guided by concern for the other, the
world will be a happier place to live, he said.

All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF) organized the
        programme.

CELEBRATING FREEDOM

The faculty and students gathered at the college campus to commemorate the
56th Independence Day on 15th August. The flag was unfurled by the Chief
Guest, Mr. Rajendra Kanekar, Head of the Physics Department.

Principal Newman Fernandes inspected the Guard of Honour. In his address,
he called on one and all to share our resources with the needy and the
downtrodden. This, he said, was also in keeping with the theme adopted for
the Ruby Jubilee Celebrations viz "With One Another For Another".

Ms. Tricia Vaz e Borges (Department of Political Science) questioned the
meaning of freedom. She urged the gathering to contribute towards the
building of the nation

Students participated enthusiastically in the programme. A fine cultural
presentation was put up. The traditional football match between the staff of
the H.S.S. and the College was also organized.
