GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 06 Nov 2003 GOA HIT BY POWER FAILURE: A suspected fault in the Maharashtra State Electricity Board system led to a power failure for more than three hours in large parts of Maharashtra and some areas of neighbouring Goa and Gujarat yesterday. The power supply was disrupted between 10.40 am and 4.30 pm.
KAMAT WARNS OF POWER SHORTAGE: Power Minister Digambar Kamat said that for the past 46 days, some disturbances were observed in the power supply to the State due to the closing down of the western grid Corba unit. Mr Kamat also informed that the Ramagundam power generation unit in the southern grid has been shut down for maintenance from November 4 and would remain so for the next 25 days. "This may cause some hardships to the power consumers in the State. However, the electricity department is making efforts to see that the domestic power supply is maintained, he observed. (NT) PASSENGERS HURT IN ACID ATTACK: At least nine passengers were injured by acid from a bottle which was accidentally smashed in a fight between drivers of two mini buses at the KTC bus stand in Curchorem yesterday. The fight broke out after a collision between mini-buses 'Olgita' and 'Vailankani'. (GT) FOOD POISONING KILLS LABOURER: One labourer died and four were reported to be in a serious condition as a result of food poisoning yesterday. The five were working for the Border Road Organisation which is constructing the four-lane highway between Verna and Mormugao Port Trust Harbour. (GT) OLD GMC COMPLEX TO HOUSE IFFI OFFICE: The International Film Festival of India office will be set up in the Goa Medical College old premises at Campal in Panjim at 6 pm today (November 6), while an advertisement for recruitment of staff has already been issued. (GT) 'CLUB CLASS' BRINGS HIGH SPENDING TOURISTS: Starting this year, airlines operating out of Europe have introduced a new 'Club Class' section for high spending passengers. By doing so, the charter companies have effectively eaten into the shares of economy or 'cattle class' seats and raised the standard of Goa, as a holiday destination. Speaking to GT, De Souza Group chairman and Travel and Tourism Association of Goa vice president, Ralph de Souza explained. (GT) ILLEGAL SHACKS MUSHROOM: The State government has permitted around 75 shacks in the coastal belt of Anjuna, Baga, Calangute and Candolim. But another 30-40 shacks have mushroomed illegally at every open space and more people are likely to follow suit. The Tourism department authorities are finding it difficult to take action as those who have put up shacks illegally claim that they have been permitted by their political masters. (NT) ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS AT AGONDA: Illegal constructions have been sprouting on the Agonda coastal belt, Canacona, in total violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone. Work on five projects is in progress and they are being built just 50 to 60 meters from the High Tide Line. (GT) STATE RE-SURVEY: At last, the re-survey of the State of Goa seems set for a take-off after a delay of more than a year. The land survey (a Rs.7.8-crore project) will commence on December 1 in Panjim. "It will be a highly comprehensive and development-oriented survey," Director of Settlement and Land Records, Mihir Vardhan told Herald. (H) AFTER A TANKER TURNED TURTLE: It was an unusual sight when scores of people began rushing with cans, buckets and bottles towards a gutter near the Kundil factory at Kundaim on Wednesday morning. People made a desperate bid to collect kerosene which was flowing into a gutter, after a tanker carrying kerosene turned turtle at Kundaim, when the driver lost control of the vehicle. (H) FISHERWOMAN BITES CCP WORKER: A Corporation of the City of Panaji worker was at the receiving end when a fish vendor bit off more than she could chew. Literally. When Vasant Morajkar along with a truckload of colleagues swooped down on a group of fish vendors below the Mandovi bridge, Deepali Kerkar bit into Morajkar's hand. (GT) ACTION PLAN FOR DENGUE: The State government has formulated a two-point programme to deal with dengue in the wake of two deaths reported in the State. Officials have noted that Ponda appears to be emerging as the epicenter of the dengue attacks, with five of the eleven cases in Goa originating in Ponda. The vector control measures include spraying of areas of storage of water and preventing people from allowing water to collect in their yards. (H) ACCUSED IN FIRING CASE: The persona arrested by Calangute police in a firing case at Baga, has been remanded to police custody for two days. According to Calangute police, Bernard Carvalho, who had injured two people under the influence of alcohol, with his pistol, was arrested by the police in wee hours on Tuesday. (NT) TO CURB STRAY ANIMALS: Armed with a mandate to reduce the menace of stray animals in the State, Corporation of the City of Panaji has turned animal catcher of sorts with the help of trained staff and an improvised vehicle for doing the job. In association with Panjim Animal Welfare Society, CCP has started acting on the mandate and has managed to round up 32 heads of cattle within four days. The campaign will move on to beaches, towns and public places.
