Did you know that there are two churches in Anjuna? Yes, the original 400-year old St. Michael the Archangel’s church at Igroz vaddo, and the chapel-turned church of St. Anthony at Vagator. The residents of Vagator found it difficult to commute to St. Michael’s church. So, they approached the authorities at the Bishop’s House in Panaji, sought the necessary permission, and changed the chapel into a church in the middle of the last century. Although Chapora/Kaisua adjoins Vagator and is much further in distance, its residents still belong to St. Michael’s parish.
Besides several small chapels, there are still five main chapels in Anjuna where Sunday mass is celebrated. They are:
1. St. John’s Chapel (Sam Joaochem Kopel) at Gaumvaddy (besides Sunday mass, Venerable Fr. Agnelo’s novenas also take place in this chapel on every Thursday);
2. Our Lady of Sorrows’ Chapel (Piedade Saibinnichem Kopel) at Chinvar;
3. St. Anthony’s Chapel (Santa Antonimchem Kopel) at Praias;
4. Holy Cross Chapel (Sant Khursachem Kopel) at Chapora; and
5. Our Lady of Health Chapel (Saud Saibinnimchem Kopel) at Mazallvaddo.
The residents of Mazallvaddo and Peddem are trying their level best to change the chapel into a full-fledged church. So, there may soon be a third church in Anjuna!
