Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there! ------------------------------
Dear Rico and all, religion is not the only reason for migrations as I already mentioned in the case of Goan Christians who migrated to Karnataka in the 16th-17th centuries They could not accept the western dress and food habits imposed upon them by the Goa Inquisition. They still refer to cow meat as *vhoddleachem* (will some Mangalorean confirm it?) for not using the word *cow* out of respect. Eating cow-meat is one of the things they could not admit. Many left Goa due to increasing land taxation. The Portuguese were in the habit of raising land taxation every time they needed some more money for their war budget! In the neighbouring kingdoms there was was policy of attracting cultivators by freeing them from any land tax during the first 25 years! Even Shivaji had this practice. It is not surprising therefore if money-conscious Mangaloreas moved out from Goa! This is not casting any aspersions upon them. Even some branches of my own family from Divar moved out to Mangalore and later to Calicut, to Calcutta and now to Delhi! Migrations have other most unexpected motives. Jesuits had missions in Karnataka, and some Jesuit parish priests who had been in parishes of Salcete (Goa) took with them their sacristans and cooks when they were posted to Karanata (then called Kanara) missions. To the best of my knowledge the families of Frs. Pratap Naik and Mathew Almeida of TSKK belong to this type of migration. Wishing an excellent New Year to all goanetters, Teotonio R. de Souza ---------------- Frederick wrote: Religion isn't the only, or even the main, reason for people to migrate out of Goa. If at all, it has played a minor part. The migration of Goan Christians in Portuguese colonial times itself to places like Mangalore and other parts of the Canara coast is something that we perhaps need to understand better. ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
