Congregation of the Sacred Family of Nazareth

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Family,I got reminded of the Congregation of the Sacred Family of Nazareth, based in Sancoale, Goa.

Few Goans have heard about the congregation and, fewer still, about their founder, Pe. Faustino de Sousa. However, the contribution this liliputian order, and their founder, have made towards education, carried out so widespread by the various religious orders of nuns, in Goa, is disproportionately stupenduous.

I don't know exactly when (with the advent of the republic, Jorge?), but at the begining of last century all the religious congregations stood banished from the Portuguese territories.

It was through assiduous, often frustrating, work put in by Pe. Faustino that got the Portuguese authorities to, at length, relent and allow him to found the new socio-educational order.

Originating, and still having their mother-house, at the Oratory of the Blessed Jose Vaz in Sancoale, the order spread in Mangalore (Canara) and, gradually, in other places in India.

Although, the Congregation of the Sacred Family of Nazareth, has never rivalled, in magnitude and achievement, its globally-spread sister-congregations, the service it rendedred them is immesureable: Pe Faustino, being granted permission to institute a holy order served as the precedent for all the other banished orders to be allowed back and continue to work in their respective fields.

The process for the beatification of Pe. Faustino de Sousa has been before the Vatican since the 1960s.

Born in Anjuna, Pe. Faustino studied under his co-villager, Pe Agnelo de Sousa, at the Seminary of Rachol and was ordained priest there. There is record of quite a few pranks that Pe. Agnelo covered up for his intrepid young scholar.

I would like to write in greater detail about the saintly pioneering educationist. But, perhaps Orlando de Sousa would do the subject far greater service: Pe. Faustino was Orlando's paternal uncle. Or perhaps, one of his other illustrious siblings: Wilfred de Sousa, Romualdo de Sousa, s.j., Sr Noemia, of the Nirmala Niketan or young Michael, the Principal Emeritus of St Michael's High School, Anjuna.

Best of the Season,

Dear Alfred

I was most pleased to read your e-mail on the "Congregation of the Sacred Family of Nazareth". Their development and many achievements have been documented in a book titled "Fr. Faustino de Souza - The Visionary Pastor" by Fr. Sergio Mascarenhas, S.F.X. It makes very interesting reading and has also highlighted the participation by Fr. Faustino in the beatification process of Blessed Fr. Jose Vaz.

Through a copy of this e-mail I request that Suzie or Willie send you a copy of the book.

I would appreciate more frequent e-mails from you to let us know how you, Eva and the family are doing. Also the intended date of your visit to Dallas. Affectionately Orlando.
