Yet, not only the Vatican but the vast majority of
 Goans are not convinced that they have a very great
 native saint who missionised as Christ did, only with
 the power of his personal love and service.  This
 canonization will only happen when the entire Goan
 community - not just a few protesters/activists and
 Bishops - puts its weight behind it and makes the
 Vatican sit up and take notice.  But the Goan
 community worldwide is still worshipping Xavier, an
 idol with colonial clay feet, and hasn't moved on to
 aspire for higher things....

RESPONSE: It is because we have been brain washed for almost 500 years. It
is also possible, that Blessed Vaz was paid lip service and not much else.
There was no push by the Portuguese authorities (Church) to have him made a
saint. This could be because it would have empowered the Goan people and
created unrest for the Portuguese - it might have meant that we were equal
to the Colonisers and of course that could not be palatable.
