Have found *ROBAN*, available at the local pharmacy (Margao, Mapusa), quite effective. The "cakes' are priced about Rs.15/- a pack... not sure now. Supposedly harmless to humans and pets!
Apparently, after 12/24 hours after ingestion of this poison, the rats suffer internal bleeding and die. But the effect of the poison also causes them to run out into the open, towards light. Hence no dead rats/mice in inaccessible places behind furniture or on the roof...and mercifully no stink. God bless the people who concocted this remedy.
