--------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO Read the Balcao Synopsis on the website http://www.goadesc.org/balcao/ ---------------------------------------------------
Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet,
Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 26th March will feature the topic Imagining Alternative Urban Environments in the context of Goa.
The discussion will be led by Rahul Shrivastava, from PUKAR, a center for urban studies in Mumbai.
PUKAR, Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research, Mumbai, as a research collective has also been discussing the meaning of urban spaces and the idea of being urban.
In the recent past there has been a constant reference to Goa as a city state with the emergence of new urban centres in the State. The recent change in the status of Panjim from a Municipality to a Corporation has triggered a lot of discussion on the changing face of the city and its new requirements.
More recently the proposal to make Goa the permanent venue for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the proposed infra structural changes to Panjim City by the Goa State Infrastucture Development Corporation (GSIDC) has generated a lot of debate, concern as well as protest.
What are the complexities of being urban in a space like Goa and the emergence of village-like habitats or slums and which are closely linked to the modern economy ?
In the context of Goa how does the Outline Development Plan (ODP) and the Planning and Development Authority (PDA) impact our urban environment ?
How can citizens imagine alternative urban environments for all of society ? What would the arguments be about this alternative from the point of environmental concerns?
What role do academics, activists, artists and architects have in such discussions?
These and other related questions will be discussed at the Friday Balcao so as to evolve action points for citizens involvement.
Those citizens wanting to contribute to the discussion at Friday Balcao are urged to attend the event while those who cannot attend the event may send their views and action plan suggestions by post to FRIDAY BALCAO Post Box 78, Mapusa 403 507 or by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
