Think Geek offers Jazz treat
A three-day festival of Jazz, with an intriguing mix of food, art and
opinion thrown in, is to take place on World Earth Day at Campal
How do most successful individuals de-stress across the world? They listen
to Jazz. This music which comes from the soul, health experts agree,
soothes the soul. True, Jazz has its origins in America, but it was born
and grew strong and beautiful from the blood, sweat and tears of the
African slaves. Which is why Jazz was chosen to celebrate World Earth Day
on 22 April 2004. Think Geek brings Jazz to Goa with a three-day festival
-- the Down to Earth Jazz Fest.
The Festival will be held around the pergola at the heritage area of
Campal, Panjim. It will begin every evening at 5.00 pm and end at 10.00 pm.
As in all her other events Think Geek aka journalist Ethel da Costa, the
FAM theory of event management prevails; Food Art and Music. This time,
community has a voice, because people can voice their views on the thorny
issue of preserving our environment.
Again, entry is free since TG events are community events. Sponsorship for
the event has been restricted to people's contributions and companies that
identify themselves with environmental issues.
TG event management, has in the recent past turned Panjim's pretty open
spaces into living people places with 'I Love Panjim' ; the 'Downtown Jazz
Festival' (along with Richard and Troy) at the Mermaid Garden; the 'Daniel
Pearl Peace Concert', 'Celebrate Panjim' ; and just recently, 'DragonFest'
at the Dona Paula jetty on Valentine's Day.
The best of jazz musicians from India and abroad will perform, among them
are great jazz bands like Jazzy Joe, Merlin de Souza, Braz and Yvonne
Gonsalves, Jazz Junction, Indian Chapter, Fusion Ensemble, Right Line and
the Louise Jones Trio. The best of Goa's artists, installation artists,
cartoonists, nature photographers and NGOs will exhibit their works at the
venue. Joy Bhaduri, Praveen Naik, Vasudev Shetye, Claudio Fiori, Carl da
Silva have promised to set their canvasses ablaze.
Charmaine Suares, Gauri Divan, Sylvia Kerkar, Verodina Ferrao, Monsoon
Heritage, Velha Goa, Nirvana, Paperworks along with environmental forums
like Green Cross, PMCA, Botanical Society of India, Nisarga Nature Club,
Goa People's Forum will be participating.
Mouth watering food and wine to suit all palates will be around to ensure
the right atmosphere to celebrate jazz and art. Reputed national beauty
companies, which are against animal testing, but are for preservation of
environment, will showcase their nature-based beauty products. For further
inquiries call 9822-121012.

The Geek speaks
Ethel da Costa in conversation with Bina Nayak on her upcoming Jazz
Festival on World Earth Day
World Earth Day will be one of those days that turns the planet into a
global village. Seminars, workshops, nightlong candle-lit vigils, peace
marches, musicconcerts and the like, are held in every country to highlight
earth issues. Goa is also in the loop with Think Geek celebrating World
Earth Day with a three-day Jazz festival Down to Earth Jazz Fest at Campal
beginning 22 April 2004 from 5 pm to 10 pm and ending on 24 April 2004.
Why have you chosen music events instead of say the more lucrative gig of
organizing exhibitions?
I believe music is a vast canvas and Goa can indeed be looked upon as a
music destination, if not today, at least some point of time in the near
future.
Would it not be an expensive exercise bringing in top jazz bands from all
over the country and abroad?
We are mobilizing such events with top bands of international repute, to
take the message right down to the grassroots and show that these things
are quite possible without big money being involved.
Why have you selected World Earth Day for this festival?
The festival aims to raise awareness about environmental issues especially
amongst the youth of Goa. We have to get rid of the tag that's been
associated with such issues. That it is the private fiefdom of the khadi
wearing, chip-on-the-shoulder bearing pseudo intellectuals. This planet
belongs to everyone and we all have a duty to stand up and protect it.
Why do you include art and food in your events?
My approach has always been unconventional, and not being an NGO but a
journalist, helps to maintain a balance. My events are community events,
where the entire family can come out, enjoy themselves, relax and go back
culturally richer. I present a platform for the huge talent that Goa has.
The festivals are great fun for the participants, the community and
throwing such fests is great fun for me.
