I read your paper regularly, and recently noticed Aires Rodrigues' memoirs of the student movement in Goa of 1978, demanding 50% bus fare concession.
This brought to mind other protests, demonstrations and social movements
of the late 1970s. This year is the jubilee year of the Institute Piedade case,
where inmates, all girls, working and students, resisted the attempt of the
authorities to make them quit the hostel which was housed in the institute.
They also prevented the demolition of this sprawling historical building, by
putting it under the Archaeological Survey of India for preservation.
These girls formed themselves into a Trust, handled the management, continued their studies and left the premises only when all of them had no further need to stay in the institute, of which they were beneficiaries. The Trust was formed after reading of the Fr Agnel Ashram in Bandra, Bombay.
