Santosh Helekar: I have never stated that Mohan Prabhu's claims are unsubstantiated or fabricated. ..... Mohan Prabhu's presents a fairly balanced view.
Gilbert responds: Thanks for the above statements. The readers of Goan cyberspace can read Mohan Prabhu's entire article for themselves and other hard facts IF AND WHEN PROVIDED by any other poster. Let's leave the descriptive opinions to the linguists and those that enjoy speechifying. :=)) In case cyberGoans want to know what the hullabaloo is all about, here is the first paragraph copied from the article from the original author. "CAPTIVITY AND EXILE IN SERINGAPATAM. IN 1784, THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY WAS ALMOST WIPED OUT FROM THE FACE OF CANARA, (emphasis mine) the brunt of which was borne by the people of Mangalore, by Tippu Sultan, Young and old, men, women and children alike - variously estimated from a low of 30,000 to as high as 80,000 - were rounded up by Tippu's soldiers, assembled in the town of Mangalore and other coastal towns, and marched on foot across the Western Ghats - some unruly ones in chains - to Seringapatam 100 miles away." Mohan Prabhu. Holocaust .... Ethnic Cleansing ..... Reservations .... Concentration Camps. To the many individuals (vast majority) and their families who died during this interment, it is little consolation what 21st century scholars (cyber-Goans) call their plight and suffering. The same applies to the native Goans (Hindus, Muslims and Catholics) who care less what and how we characterize the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa. Some of today's Goans and Indians tend "to use" history for their vested interest (or personal fulfillment) instead of learning from it. You are definitely not one of them. That's why I enjoy the intellectual dialogue with you.
