Once again, girls have fared better than boys. In all 11,039 students had taken the examination, of which 8,600 passed. Results are available on websites, www.goaeduboard.org and www.goaresults.nic.in (GT) GOAN FALLS PREY TO AL-QAEDA BULLETS: A pall of gloom has descended on the family of late Joe John Fernandes at Panzorconi, Cuncolim. John was the lone Goan, who fell prey to the Al-Qaeda's bullets on the Saad Corporation in Saudi Arabia. Devastated by the news of John's brutal murder by the terrorists, the world has suddenly grown pitch dark for this wife Lydia and son Joritton. Late Joe had worked in Bahrain for 18 years for the Ramada chain of hotels and just six months ago, he had joined the Saad Corporation for better prospects. (GT) MOTHER-TONGUE CAN BE MADE MANDATORY: SC: In a significant judgement, the Supreme Court has ruled that if a government decided to make the State language a compulsory subject in the school syllabi, it cannot be said to be violative of the fundamental right of the minority community to establish and administer schools. (PTI report in GT) PROBE IN CUSTODIAL DEATH: The State government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the custodial death of a convict (Caitan Figueiredo) in the central jail at Aguada on May 18. (H) ALEMAO PROMISES: The newly elected South Goa MP, Mr Churchill Alemao, on May 31, visited Vasco for the first time and heard the grievances of the fisherfolk, fruit vendors and hawkers. The grievances pertained to disconnection of electricity supply in the fish market, sopo collection from the fisherfolk and shifting of hawkers and fruits vendors under one rood. (NT) NO TOBACCO DAY: Several service organisations took out a rally in Panaji, on May 31 evening, shouting anti-tobacco slogans and distributing pamphlets explaining the ill-effects of smoking and chewing tobacco. (NT) MARGAO SEWERAGE: It's exactly four years on May 30 since the sewage treatment plant was commissioned, but the 7.5 mld capacity plant does not treat even one mld of sewage. The government's pilot scheme to woo household owners to take sewage connections at subsidized rates has failed to generate the desired response. The PWD department had proposed to issue 100 connections on first-come-first-serve basis by charging Rs.2000 per household or Rs.1000 per flat, when the cost per unit works out to be Rs.12,000 to Rs.15,000. (H) MAN MISSING: Mr Agnelo Cistode Faria (45), a resident of Cansaulim, has been reported missing since May 28 alongwith a Kinetic Honda scooter. His wife, Mr Julia, lodged a complaint with the police. (NT) SEWAGE IN OPEN DRAIN: Continuous flow of sewage from some toilets into an open drain in a residential area of Guirim (in Bardez) and the finding of high proportion of enteric bacteria in the samples of the wastes, has raised apprehensions of a major health problem among residents. (GT) PARENTS DEMAND: A memorandum has been submitted to the Chief Minister by some parents demanding postponement of the Goa common entrance examination scheduled for July 17 and 18. They have said that the announcement has come too late causing worry and anxiety in the minds of the students and parents over admission to engineering and pharmacy. (H) UGUEM'S WATER WOES: Despite the onset of the monsoon season, villagers residing at Ponsamoll ward of Uguem panchayat are still made to suffer in terms of drinking water supply. With the public taps running dry, villagers of the remote ward of Uguem depend solely on the water tanker that supplies drinking water. (H) RAINS CREATE CHAOS IN BICHOLIM: Heavy rains lashing the Bicholim taluka since the past two days threw normal life out of gear with arterial roads getting flooded. Trees were uprooted at different places and the Fire Brigade had a tough time in clearing the debris. (GT) NO TRUST AGAINST VELIM CHIEF: Nearly 28 months after the formation of the body, six members of the village Panchayat of Velim have tabled a no confidence against sarpanch Baptist Fernandes, owing allegiance to local MLA and Minister for Water Resources, Filipe Neri Rodrigues. (H) KONKANI PLAY: The premier show of Prince Jacob's new play "Rupnnem" will be staged at the Kala Academy on June 4 at 7 pm. The play is a translation of a Marathi play "Sahi re Sahi". This is the first time a Marathi play is translated into Konkani and being performed by Konkani stage artists. (H) MISSISSAUGA CELEBRATION OF CULTURES: "Carassauga", a 3-day festival, concluded on May 30. This year the festival put up 19 pavilions. Goanetter Tim de Mello was the judge of the pavilions in Group 2 (China, Serbia, Italy, USA, Lebanon, Ukraine and Poland), while his wife Jenny judged Group 1 (Caribbean, Croatia, Portugal, Jamaica and Ghana). The other pavilions were Cyprus, Hawaii, Greece, Egypt, Phillipines, India and Armenia. The festival was a tremendous success judging from the crowds that filled each pavilion. It takes about nine months to prepare for the festival. Fr Gualberto, a dynamic pastor, has been credited from bringing unity and fellowship among the Christian community of the small village. During the second Mass on May 30, Agnel D' Souza, on behalf of the parishioners, read out a touching address of gratitude to Fr Gualberto, who will be taking charge at Sto Estevam church. FR RICHARD BIDS ADIEU: Fr Richard D'Silva, the former Chaplain of Mount Carmel Chapel, Ponda, who was instrumental in introducing Hindustani customs and culture at the chapel, was accorded a fond farewell by the parishioners on May 31. Hosts Football Club of Siolim scored a hard fought 3-1 victory over Nerul Sports Club in the Siolim Villagers Cup at Siolim grounds. United Club of Fatorda pip Dando Boys, Colva, 5-2 to move into the finals of the Mardol Trophy Soccer tournament at Mardol grounds.
