KONAKNI HEROES MOURNED

On 17th of this month in Kuwait City at the residence of A. Veronica Fernandes, Kuwait Konknni Kendr organized a meeting to mourn the death of Konkani heroes namely Fr. Freddy J. D'Costa and Felicio Cardoso who died a month back in a tragic car accident outside Goa and Mr. Julio Moraes who died in Ribandar Goa. Both Fr. Freddy and Cardoso were well known Konkani writers. Lot of stories have been written on both these heroes after their death. Their deaths were a great blow for the promotion of Konkani especially Roman script Konkani. During the meeting lasting over an hour every speaker highlighted the good work of their contribution for the cause of Goan language Konkani. The meeting started with the prayer conducted by Luis Cardoso for the departed souls followed by a brief speech in praise of good work of the dead. Elvino Rodrigues the president of KKK in his speech showed the link among Fr. Freddy, Cardoso, Julio Moraes and KKK. Mr. Domnick Araujo by holding a flower Rose in his hand described the importance of Fr. Freddy's Gulab for Romi Konkani readers. He also described the importance of Fr. Freddy's Tiatros including One Act Plays. Lino Bab Dourado in his speech showed his deep regret over the great loss of Fr. Freddy and Felicio Cardoso and said the void created by their deaths will be difficult to fill. As a student he said he had a lesson in Konkani written by Felicio Cardoso and since then he said he always followed his writings. Mr. Alexander M. Fernandes who had close link with Felicio Cardoso appreciated the wisdom of this departed soul. He said Mr. Cardoso was a very literate person and had good knowledge of the art of drama. He further said that Mr. Cardoso once requested the then topmost Goan stage artistes including Souza Ferrao to watch Marathi and Gujarati dramas and based on these to improve our Konkani Dramas, if necessary even translate as Prince Jacob has done now in Goa. Mr. Olavo Joao also spoke and in his short speech he appreciated KKK for organizing such meetings thereby remembering our dead heroes. A. Veronica Fernandes in his speech elaborated the excellent work Julio Moraes did for the cause of Konkani from Kuwait. He said Mr. Moraes was a man of principle who will defy anyone for the cause of Konkani and also defy anyone who is promoting injustice in society. He was a very charitable person who helped and sheltered in his home many of the needy Goans besides helping some Goans to come to Kuwait. To keep the memory of Moraes alive we must fight for the cause of justice and for the cause of needy. A. Veronica Fernandes also highlighted the works of Fr. Freddy and Felicio Cardoso in the development and promotion of Konkani. Elaborating on this he said when Fr. Freddy first time came to Kuwait how Alex Martins helped him, so also other Goans many of them are no more in Kuwait now. About Felicio Cardoso, A. Veronica said he was the man behind the first Konkani Roman script daily “Soth” in Goa and was a very good writer especially on historical articles.

Rosary Ferns while proposing the vote of thanks said how he, his brother and other colleagues in New Goan Overseas Association with the support of Avertano Furtado helped Fr. Freddy in organizing his Tiatro at Indian Arts Circle. In fact that was the first tiatro staged at IAC auditorium.
