About 15 minutes into the journey, the agitators ordered the 17 passengers out of the bus and stoned the vehicle.KTC officials at Panjim did not rule out the possibility of a backlash, following the recent demolitions at the Baina red-light area. A sizeable community hailing from Karnataka had been rendered homeless following the demolitions. (H) PACKAGE TO BAINA'S DISPLACED LABOURERS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday announced a rehabilitation package for labourers and petty traders who had been displaced due to the demolition of the Baina red light area last week. Seventy-seven families comprising 250 persons have been listed for compensation - partly cash and a built-up free accommodation. Parrikar told reporters the new package was being offered on 'humanitarian ground' as some people who were not connected in any manner with the commercial sex activity at Baina, had to suffer on account of the demolition of cubicles. (GT) PROTEST RALLY IN BAINA: A former minister in Karnataka, Leeladevi R Prasad, an ex-member of Legislative Council of Karnataka, Prafulla Madhukar, toured the now torn down red-light area and met several families who are left homeless and taking shelter in the sports complex. On June 21 morning, the two women ex-legislators along with the displaced families held a protest rally in the area. (H) EROSION GRIPS POLEM SHORES: Fear and anxiety has gripped the minds of people living on the coastline of Polem in Canacona, as the Arabian Sea has started eroding the mainland since the onset of the monsoon and has caused considerable damage to plant and property. There exist over 50 houses on the Polem shore that face the threat of total annihilation if precautionary measures are not taken immediately. (H) UNDERGROUND CABLES IN PANAJI AND MARGAO: A Rs.35-crore plan afoot for laying underground electricity cables in Panaji and Margao to prevent power shutdowns. For this the Powergrid Corporation will float tenders next month. (NT) CET FOR ENGG, PHARMACY AS SCHEDULED, CM: The Common Entrance Test for pharmacy and engineering admissions in Goa will be held as scheduled on 17 and 18 July 2004 as the All India Council for technical Education has not relaxed holding of the examination, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said during a press conference yesterday. (GT) PHARMA UNIT FRAUD: The Economic Development Corporation has filed a complaint against four officers of Goa Antibiotics Pharmaceutical Ltd for an alleged fraud over the purchase of Rs.1.8 crore air handling machine for its unit at Tuem in Pernem taluka. (H) CHICHINIM'S ULTIMATUM: The Chinchinim Citizens Committee has served an ultimatum on the electricity department to supply uninterrupted power or face the wrath of the power consumers. A memorandum to this effect was submitted to the Executive Engineer by CCC president, Neves Anthony Rebello on June 21. (H) NEW DY SARPANCH IN LOUTULIM: Philomena Fernandes is the new deputy sarpanch of Loutulim village panchayat. Philomena was declared elected unopposed in the elections held on June 21. The elections were necessitated following the resignation of Agnelo Fernandes, who quit to don the mantle of village sarpanch. (H) MERCES SARPANCH RESIGNS: The directorate of panchayats, Panaji, has accepted the resignation of Merces sarpanch, Ms Vishwalata Kalngutkar, with effect from June 12. Kalangutkar resigned due to personal reasons. (NT) MAN JUMPS IN WELL: One Hanuman Hirappa Lamani, a 40-year-old man committed suicide by jumping tin a well at Siren, Chimbel, on June 21. (H) FOR PLAYING LOUD MUSIC: Mr Naresh M Godwani was arrested and later released on bail, for playing amplified music under the Madhya Pradesh Music Act. The Calangute police registered a case against the owner of West End Club at Saligao for allegedly playing loud amplified music. (NT) FEIGNS IGNORANCE: CM Manohar Parrikar, on Monday feigned ignorance about the involvement of RSS activists in the destruction of street name plaques at Fontainhas and surrounding areas. (H) 'SHITU' ON GOA DOORDARSHAN: The popular telefilm "Shitu", produced by Shrusti Vision, Margao, will be telecast on Goa Doordarshan on 23 and 24 June at 6 pm. The telecast on 23 June is in celebration of Shenoi Goembab's birth anniversary and also Goa Doordarshan anniversary. The telefilm is bad on the Marathi novel "Shitu" written by well-known Marathi writer GN Dandekar. BY THE WAY: Pigs are given showers, a sauna and a massage before being killed in a kindly slaughterhouse in western China. Light music is played as the pigs are pampered before being given electric shocks to kill them, according to the Hong Kong edition of China Daily newspaper. Gua Xianfeng, boss of the slaughterhouse in Mianyang, Sichuan province, said the pigs fell asleep after the sauna and massage and felt no pain when they were killed. (GT) MAJOR PINTO MOURNED: The department of Sainik Welfare, Panaji, and ex-servicemen community mourned the demise of Major (retd) Dr JM Pinto, a World War II, veteran, who died on June 4. He worked as the regimental medical officer of the 11 Sikh regiment and was later promoted to the tank of a major. He was awarded the gallantry award 'Mention-in-dispatches' in 1945. He was appointed as DADMS of HQ17 division and alter demobilized in Burma in 1946. He took civil appointment as senior assistant radiotherapist in Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and attended various conferes in the US, Kabul and several other places in the country.
