------------------------------------------------- MOVING IMAGES FILM CLUB NOTE THE NEW SCREENING TIME! ------------------------------------------------- Jaime (Portugal, 1999) ============ Director António-Pedro Vasconcelos
Screening on 1st October 2004 Venue: International Centre Goa, Dona Paula Time: 3:30pm & 6:30 pm (two screenings) Duration: 111 minutes
Set in the historic Portuguese seaport of Oporto, Jaime follows a 13 year-old boy with an unemployed father and a mother who has just run off with another man. When his father has his motorcycle stolen, adding to his misery and leaving him unable to find work, Jaime tries to step up into an adult role and provide for the family. Portugal's child labor laws are not quite as sympathetic to the family's plight, but even at his young age Jaime has little respect for the regulations of a country whose failure to provide work for his father will result in the breakup of his family. A typical teenager, Jaime contends there is very little that is 'fair' in this world, but that does not mean he is willing to accept a life that, without his family together and happy, makes very little sense.
Awards: Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Film Fest Debut feature award at Cannes.
