US WARSHIPS TO BE IN GOA: Three US Navy vessels, including a USD 900 Million nuclear submarine, will visit Goa for rest and recreation on 3 October, Naval sources aid. The warships - USS Cowpens, USS Gary and USS Alexandria - will call at Mormugao after participating in Exercise Malabar, the fifth annual Anti-Submarine Warfare exercise, with the Indian Navy, off Konkan coast. "USS Alexandria" is a 14-year-old Los Angeles class nuclear-powered attack submarine that is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, Harpoon Anti-ship missiles and torpedoes. "USS Cowpens" is a guided missile cruiser, carrying a crew of 370 and is 13 years old. "USS Gary", a 20-year-old frigate, will be carrying 215 crew members and a variety of heavy weapons. (Reuven Proenca in GT) PARRIKAR DEFENDS SKYBUS PROJECT: The State government does not rule out the implementation of the Skybus project of the Konkan Railway Corporation in future on the 13-km Panaji-Mapusa route. CM Manohar Parrikar stated that a full-proof technology develops only after repetitive trials are held. It is only during such trials that errors in the technology can be detected and set rights, he remarked. "I am still of the opinion that the indigenous Skybus project of the KRC is a good technological development. I am prepared to invest in it provided the international safety agencies certify it as a full proof and safe technology. (GT) ONCE OPEN A TIME: "Myths", the first part of a multimedia exhibition curated by art critic and writer Neeta Omprakash, was inaugurated by Abhay Sardessai, Editor, "The Art News Magazine of India", Mumbai, at Fundacao Oriente, Fontainhas, on September 24 evening. Artists Hanuman Kambli, Apurva Kulkarkani, Rajeshree Thakker and Querozito de Souza gave an audio-visual presentation of their works, which will be on display till September 29 from 10 am to 6 pm. The four-part exhibition is an outcome of a unique study project on "Representation of Myths, Mythology, Epics, Fairy Tales and Fables in Visual Arts" conducted by art critic and writer Neeta Omprakash. Says Neeta, "A myth serves as an umbilical cord connecting and individual to the culture thereby nurturing with the sap of wisdom of the ancient culture giving strength and hope to survive." RADHARAO BLASTS CONGRESS: UGDP senior vice-president Radharao Gracias came out openly in support of the BJP candidate Isidore Fernandes and flayed Congress policies at the function to mark the inauguration of the BJP's election office of BJP candidate at the Poinguinim market. (GT) CAG'S QUERY OVER RECLAMATION: Goa Action Group has written to Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority seeking to know if any monitoring is being done to ensure that the terms and conditions laid down by NIO and the panel are being adhered to. The CAG also pointed out that while the works are being carried out, it should be ensured that these do not obstruct the discharge outlets of storm water drains and that all constructions projecting beyond the existing built up river bank should be supported on pile foundations. Krishna Gawas, the accused and a neighbour of the victim, had given the girl chocolates and a rupee for the past three days. (H) MAN HELD IN VEREM RAPE CASE: In yet another arrest in connection with the gang rape of a minor girl at Verem, the police have held one Jagdish (25 years). The owner of the house to which the girl was taken to by the accused resides in Dubai. The owner had appointed Venkatesh (also accused in the crime) as a caretaker for the house while he was away, police investigations have revealed. (GT) GANJA SEIZED: The Anti Narcotics Cell, Panaji, have seized 995 gm of raw ganja worth Rs.9500 from one Sheikh Ismael at the Mapusa Bus stand, on September 27. Ismail hails from Belgaum. (GT) CURTORIM RESIDENTS PROTEST: Residents of Curtorim on Monday (September 26) morning gathered outside a steel factory in the village to protest against the setting up of a sponge iron plant. (H) WOMAN RESCUED FROM RIVER: A 24-year-old woman from Parra was rescued by local fishermen when she attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the Mandovi bridge, September 27 morning. The victim who worked as a clerk at the Secretariat, is undergoing treatment at the ICU of the Goa Medical College. (GT) E-CATALOGUING OF GOVT LIBRARIES: For the first time in the history of the library movement in Goa, e-cataloguing of Central Library's priceless collection of books has commenced. As many as 1.5 lakh titles including books by renowned authors, encyclopedias, Goan books, etc, are being e-catalogued in the ongoing process. The process of e-cataloguing, according to Central Library Curator Pia Rodrigues will enable both the general public and staff to electronically locate and identify books that are shelved in more than eight sections of the library. (H) INDOCO ACQUIRES SOLVAY'S BRAND: Indoco Remedies, a leading pharmaceutical company with presence in pain management, gynaecology, paediatric, cardiology and diabetology segments has acquired Karvol Plus, a key brand in the anti-cold segment from Solva Pharma India Ltd, on September 27. Suresh G Kare, chairman and MD of Indoco Remedies Ltd, said, "The acquisition marks a significant development towards taking forward our current strategy of strengthening our product portfolio." Indoco is currently in the process of expanding its facilities - one of the Company's plants in Goa is expected to be operational in December 2004. The Rs.10,000 crore Indian wedding industry sees around 10 million couples getting married each year, and is growing at a whopping 25 per cent per annum. Says Adex chairman SP Shah, "The expenditure on nuptial rites has shot up 43 per cent with Mumbai alone blowing away Rs.2,450 crore last year (2003) on weddings and related functions like mehndi, sangeet, receptions, etc. (GT) SUICIDE PREVENTION HELPLINE: The Psychiatric Society of Goa will soon start its Suicide Prevention helpline intended at providing assistance to all those in distress. (GT) UK EXPORTED CONTAMINATED BLOOD PRODUCTS: Britain has exported blood products that could be contaminated with the human form of mad cow disease to at least eleven countries, including India, raising fears of further transmission of the deadly condition, a leading daily reported on September 27. Officials last week contacted five of the countries identified as most at risk from the imported blood products, which were donated by nine people who died from Variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, "The Times" reported. (GT) SHOBHA GURTU PASSES AWAY: The Thumri queen known for her rich earthy voice, Shobha Gurtu, passed away at her residence in Mumbai, following a cardiac arrest, on September 27. Born in 1925 in Belgaum to a Goan mother, Shobha began her initial training under her mother Menekabai Shirodkar, a professional dancer and a student of Atrauli Jaipur Gayaki of Ustad Alladiya Khan.
