HC directive to Centre on ‘killer beaches’ UNI New Delhi Sept 29: The Delhi High Court today directed the central government to coordinate with state governments concerned to inform the public about “killer beaches” across the country. A division bench, comprising the Chief Justice of the High Court, Mr Justice B C Patel and Mr Justice B D Ahmed also directed the Centre to coordinate with various universities and educational institutions to chalk out safety guidelines for taking students on study trips. The directions came while the judges disposed of a petition filed by parents of five students who drowned off Candolim beach in Goa on August 25 last while on an excursion organised by the Amity Business School, seeking integrated reliefs, including a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the incident and compensation. Not finding the other prayers in ‘public interest’, the court gave liberty to the petitioners to approach an appropriate forum to seek redressal in the regard. The petition had sought that the Union culture and tourism and environment ministries should ensure protection of “life of innocent tourists visiting inherently dangerous beaches”. The petition sought ‘exemplary damages’ from the institution for its alleged negligence in not finding out the inherently dangerous nature of the beach and then allowing students on the beach without being escorted by any teacher. It claimed that no safety precautions were taken nor any provision for rescue operations was made, and demanded a probe by the investigating agency.
