The reported statement by P.M. Dr. Manmohan Singh that India will
assist in the conduct of the proposed Iraq elections must be viewed with
great misgiving and should be vehemently opposed by all right-thinking
Indians. The elections are being held whilst the country continues to
be under foreign military occupation, which has been categorically described
as being "illegal" by no less an authority that UN Secretary General
Kofi Anan. Any assistance in conducting elections under these circumstances
would amount to colluding with the occupying coalition forces in a palpably
illegal act and cause great damage to India's image in the world.
Credible elections in Iraq can only be held if and when the
occupying coalition forces are withdrawn and replaced with neutral
peace-keeping troops operating under direct UN Command.
