(H) REMAND IN DRUGS CASE: Fifty-two-year-old Margao resident, Mario Custodio Mascarenhas, was nabbed by Anti-Narcotic Cell officials at Miramar and held for illegal possession of some 4.5 kg of chars on October 7 night, near the Sulabh toilet complex at Miramar. A Samsung mobile phone and Rs.16,000 in cash found was found on his person besides the charas. (H) KONKANI AKADEMI TO PUBLISH 10 BOOKS: As a part of its aim to promote Konkani literature in Roman script by giving financial assistance to the writers, Dalgado Konkani Akademi will publish 10 books - novels, short stories, tiatrs, khell-tiatrs, poetry, one-act plays, translations, etc from various Konkani writers. This was disclosed by the Akademi president Tomazinho Cardozo at the general body meeting of the Akademi held in Panaji recently. The work will be carried out by the literary committee of the Akademi headed by Fr Peter Cardozo. The books will be released on 17 December 2004 at Margao at a special cultural function to be organised to "create awareness among the Goan people about their identity". The general body meeting of the Akademi also decided to celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Mons Dalgado by organizing numerous programmes throughout the year beginning from 8th May 2005. (GT) QUEPEM LOCAL DROWNS IN POND: A 60-year-old man from Igramol-Deao, Quepem, drowned after accidentally falling into a pond. Inacio Savio Carvalho, who suffered from epileptic seizures was passing by 'Toleaband' when he had a seizure and fell into the water, resulting in his death. (H) FOUND DEAD IN BENAULIM: Colva police found the body of an unidentified man at Benaulim on October 7. The person is aged around 35. The body was found near a chapel. (NT) CO-OPERATIVE STAFF IS NOT ENOUGH: If the health centres need to maintain cleanliness and be equipped with basic facilities like X-ray, the primary health centre in Bicholim, which is the main town of this taluka, is lacking in these minimal requirements. (GT) RASTA ROKO IN MADDEL: Residents of Maddel in Margao staged a rasta roko on October 7 for around three hours to protest against the erection of a mobile tower in a residential locality. The residents maintained that the erection of the mobile tower would give rise to radiation in the thickly populated locality. An official of the mobile firm, however, disputed the claims of the protestors and allayed fears on the radiation aspect. "Feel Like Going Home" is the first of a seven-part television series titled "The Blues" by Martin Scorsese. (H) MAHURAT OF "ALEESHA": The mahurat for the Konkani film "Aleesha" was held at Aquem-Margao on October 6. Among other veteran film actress, Ashalata Wabgaonkar, was also present. The Konkani film, which will be produced and directed by Rajendra Talak at a cost of Rs.40 lakh, is based on the theme of love for nature and will be shot at different locations in Goa. Film actress Priyanka Bidiye and Tapana Acharya will play a lead role in the film. The shooting is expected to be completed by October 30 and the film released by November 27.
