the goan culture or rather the goan christian way of life is almost five centuries old. pesonally,i believe that the culture of goans resident in goa is slightly different from the way of life of goans whether they are ( or were ) living in bombay, poona, east africa, gulf and now in western urban centres like london and toronto.
in goa, although it is fast fading away, the christian way of life was centered in a family. a mother took pride that she has three or four sons who are respectively given to god ( priest), to people ( teacher and doctor ) and to the devil ( lawyer ). ultimately it is the priest ( even if he was her third or fourth son) whose decision was the final word in the family matters.
the goans away from goa syndrome, was probably started with the short occupation of goa by the british troops during the napoleonic wars in the early 19th century. it was napoleon himself who said that the army marches on its stomach only for the british troops to realize that goans could bake bread ( and were adept at other !home! departments ) unlike their hindu counterparts in the rest of india. from that point in time onwards, goans started migrating to bombay, poona etc. the main migration was originally from bardez concelho where there too many people and too few paddyfields.
the humble goan educated his children in the cosmopolitan surroundings of bombay etc. to become ordinary clerks in the second generation, the latter produced professionals like doctor, surgeon, university professors, engineers etc. and the fourth generation produced state governor, police commissioner, chief of armed forces, archbishops and cardinals.
the rest , as they say, is the history in the making.
