Switching on street lights just after 5 pm (today, they came on at 5.10 pm) must be a dubious record of sorts, but it does happen in Goa. Wouldn't the state save a lot of power by switching on the lights at the most-apt time, rather than going by the shift-duties of employees?

Maybe citizens could volunteer with this, if the linesmen are in a hurry to leave for home (and late to get to work). While some countries work on 'daylight saving time', we seem to be intent on opting for a model of 'daylight wasting time'.

We in Goa need to take advantage of our long days, specially during the summary, and moonlight nights, to make sure we optimise the use of power when it is really needed. -FN
