The Citizen's Action Group (CAG) has strongly deplored and condemned the vicious attempts by the Goa BJP to malign and tarnish the name of Goa's distinguished Director General of Police Mr. Amod Kanth. The Union Home Ministry has been briefed of this conspiracy ostensibly floated at the behest of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who has not been able to get DGP Kanth to play to his tunes. CAG has commended DGP Kanth for not bowing down to political pulls and pressures and resisting attempts by the political bosses to reduce a senior position of Director General of Police to that of a slaved sepoy's post. CAG expresses hope that brave and courageous officers like Amod Kanth would act as an inspiration to the rest of the bureaucracy who should always discharge their duties as servants of the people and not saviours cum slaves of the politicians. In recent years many upright IAS and IPS officers had opted to move out of Goa by standing up against political interference. One can recall the unceremonious treatment that was also meted out to former Chief Secretary S.R. Sharma in 1999, then DGP R.S. Sahaye in 2000 and former DGP Seva Das had to also bid Goa farewell earlier this year after a very brief stint as he would not bow down to the political bosses. In a democracy no Chief Minister should attempt to be a Super-cop and trample on the Independence of the police force by interfering with its day to day functioning and the police should be allowed to function independently devoid of any manipulation or political pressures. CAG is organising a public meeting at Panjim next week followed by a peaceful demonstration before Chief Minister Parrikar's official residence at Althinho to express solidarity with Mr. Amod Kanth.
