Brazil to teach football to Indian children
PANKHOORI SINHA

NEW DELHI: Idolise the likes of Pele and Ronaldo, and want to follow suit?
Here’s your chance. Brazil — a country where football is a way of life — is
offering to invite Indian children over, to receive specialised training in
the sport. If this sounds too good to be true, you need to visit the
Brazilian stalls at the 24th India International Trade Fair (IITF) at
Pragati Maidan.

According to Jose Gabriel Assis de Almeida, legal advisor to the IBCC,
interested children above 11 years of age will be taken to Belo Horizonte
city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais for their football training.
"These children will be looked after by the club. Not only will they get
expert training from several coaches, they’ll also be advised on their
dietary needs by nutritionists."

If everything goes off as planned, said Almeida, a Brazilian soccer school
in India could be a reality by mid-2005. It would operate in collaboration
with one of the Indian football clubs. "We’ve heard that there are big clubs
in Goa and Kolkata; we’ll probably be looking at them," revealed Almeida.
