'AMCHEM GOEM' special issue of seminar - alert by dr brian mendonca

take a look at the beautifully brought out special issue on Goa in the latest
issue of the journal 'seminar' published from delhi (nov 2004). titled 'amchem
goem' weaved in a wraith of waves of blue and green against a buff grey
background on the cover, the issue is a primer on contemporary goa and its
lineages. maria couto's thoughtful opening is janus-faced and says we could be
in peril of 'being fossilized into a caricature' (13)if we do not 'retain the
vitality of the goan character.' Maria's husband Alban takes on the Goan
economy and interestingly brings literature (Pundalik Naik's 'Acchev') to
indict the excesses of mining in goa (35). For more on 'Bikhrem jevon' (food
for the beggars) turn to Fatima Gracias's culinary journey (42). Mauzo and
cota offer a succinct literary map of goa highlighting the signposts of every
genre. in 'an outsider in goa' bal mundkar sees goans as easy-going 'lotus-
eaters' and with a penchant, like parsis, for litigation (82). just back from
a doing a poetry reading at the ncpa i liked the ease of naresh
fernandes's 'remembering anthony gonsalves'. in it naresh outlines the
contribution of goan musicians in mumbai since the 30's. there are other
writers too but why don't u c for yourself? in easy-to-read demy-quarto size
(11"x 8.5") this is a collectors issue. and its available only for Rs. 30.
