: [Goanet]Goa builds a road paved with gold... almost Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] GOA BUILDS A ROAD PAVED WITH GOLD... ALMOST >From Pamela D'Mello asianage at sancharnet.in "Some 2000 ornamental and street lamps have been imported from Belgium at a cost ranging between Rs 60,000 to Rs 150,000 each, while Rs 20 lakh (two million rupees) have been spent on three lights at a temporary jetty." ____________________________________________________________________________ ___________________ I happened todrive down Campal (Panjim) last night, and it was a veritable fairyland-- there were lights on the pavements( expensive Belgian Street lamps),lights on the sidewalks, lights in the trees.Labourers seemed to be working at a frantic pace to clear debris. The streets were festooned with film posters.Miramar circle looked pretty, with a fountain gushing, with great gusto. There was an air of expectancy - people all wondering what changes the IFFI will bring to Goa. I live in a village in South Goa, which experiences power interuptions, power failure frequently.I couldnt help feeling the injustice of it all -- power is available in plenty,in Panjim, while my village has to languish without lights, voltage fluctuations. The aftermath of frantic construction in Panjim remains to be seen.Much as there are positive things about the IFFI,we,who live, here in Goa, are "the fall guys" and we have to pay the price, literally ,of "progress".
